Support for Markdown in notes

ivan.aga says:
I think it would be _really_ *useful* to be able to format the text in Task notes, using some well established syntax like Markdown (http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax).

This would give us the ability to make bulletlists, bold, italic, etc.

Just a thought!

I concur, markdown would be a nice addition.

Thought I'd resuscitate this thread; I'm also interested in formatting in notes. Another possibility (apart from Markdown) is Dean Allen's Textile parser.

Thanks for a terrific service.

Either this or some formatting options like you have in most Web-mail services nowadays:

- bold, italics
- proportional or fixed-width font
- hyperlink
- bulleted and numbered lists

Great idea, just keep it lean and keep the notes fast-loading.

Nobody wants a mini-m$-word document page inside their nice rtm page. ;D

I would definitely support either Markdown or Textile, but I generally find Markdown faster for fairly simple things, especially with the way it handles reference linking.

Just another vote for this - I assume wouldn't be incredibly difficult to do, especially if you made it an option in settings, thus meaning that you don't have to render every note by every user in Markdown...

Please? :P

tekacs says:
Incidentally, the way that RTM currently works (and the fact that I write using a subset of Markdown without even thinking about it, nowadays) I end up linking away to Evernote shards from my notes - this is awfully cumbersome, especially when the note just contains a simple list...

black.puppydog says:
couldn't this be done in JScript (at least in the webapp)?
In any case, this should *not* be hard to implement and would increase usability by lengths.
It would at least be a workaround for as long as we wait for sublists/folders.

Right now nested lists get their nesting removed, having a formatter like Markdown would be awesome!

It would definitely be a great addition. I use Evernote when I need more than just scribble quick notes for a task (and I know that finally there's better integration between the two services), but if I was able to use Markdown I wouldn't need that workaround anymore.

Totally agree. Would love Markdown or basic formatting functionality in notes! :) Nothing too complicated like Microsoft Word-like formatting, but simple headings and bulleted notes for things like client revisions that I'm trying to remember.. Bold, italic, ordered and unordered lists, etc. Basically, the same formatting options you might find in an email service like Gmail.

Wow, 11 years of requests for this and no response from RTM? My guess is that syncing across all platforms and integrations raises some questions, but please let us know if this is on the radar or not.

Yep, this would be great. I'm using the syntax anyway because I use markdown in other tools. Sometimes I just ^C^V some reference information with markdown formatting and it's kinda annoying that RTM doesn't do even basic formatting.

Markdown has become way popular now than when this request was created. Many people are now familiar with markdown and use it on a daily basis in various other tools. Adding markdown support will definitely improve usefulness of Notes.

Another +1. Amazed this has been a request for _fifteen_ years.

I'm guessing there's a concern about people's existing notes being suddenly marked-down. Personally, I would really love a feature toggle in settings.

This request is over 16 years old. I'm rather pointlessly going to add a +1 here, given that it does not seem to be getting looked at.

The current notes feature could be useful but is way too limited. I don't understand why I would want to add multiple notes that can be edited and deleted separately. Why not just give a single large notes panel with basic formatting? (It does not even need to be Markdown.)

Ideally I should not need to click "edit" to write in it, and it would just switch to edit mode as needed. If I want to delete any text, or the whole note, I can just select and delete it.

Bold, italic, underline, bullets, numbered lists, links would be enough. Ideally, it would be great to be able to add checkboxes to a note where I do not want to use subtasks.

@pauk.healey is spot on: make it optional and off by default so it doesn't affect existing notes.

I have been using notes a lot more in recent months, since integrating with AI LLMs and copying content from chatGPT and bard. Basic formatting in notes would be awesome! This idea has been around for a long time, so wasn't sure if I should add to this, but please do consider it. For those that just want plain text, some form of mark-up does not impact that.

I sent a request to Bob and received the URL for this forum in response.
In my request, I wrote something even more greedy than you guys.
I wanted the development team to consider Markdown (or Textile), MathJax, Mermaid (or PlantUML), and a real-time view method.

Equipped with these software technologies will surely catch the attention of students who know about them, especially students in science and engineering fields. Those students will get jobs and earn money in the future, and some of them will be supporters of the Pro version.

The other day, I tried out Notion, a software that can also be used for task management. It's not as simple and quick as RTM. However, task notes provide a full Markdown real-time view. After actually using it, I see no reason not to incorporate Markdown.
