Manual Sort

gregmay82 says:
Not sure if this is the place for feature requests, but a manual drag-and-drop sort of tasks in a given list would sure be nice.

(closed account) says:
Good idea, would be useful. Ideally the selected ordering would be "sticky" so that it persisted unless changed.

I would love this.
I'd pull all my employees over from Basecamp if we could do this, because I could say "top of your list = first thing to do".
Right now the system doesn't give me an effective way to communicate priority.

This is amazingly important and would benefit many users greatly. I often desire to drag and drop tasks within a day to more easily sort them in the order that they should be completed.
I was actually about to post something to suggest this. I believe the best way to implement this would be to have a "manual" in the "sort by" drop down that stored previous manual sorts combining them with the current active sort method.
Please RTM devs. THIS IS A MUST.

This is a crucial feature for me, and it is one of two missing features in RTM that a) keeps me from recommending it without reservation and b) forces me to use multiple task trackers.
For MANY types of tasks, it is impractical to constantly adjust the dates, priority, and sometimes even the name of the task (alphabetical sort) to get tasks into the order you need.
A simple option to drag-and-drop tasks into the proper sequence is very important. As simple an app as it is (and totally unsophisticated in some regards) Zenbe Lists does a beautiful job of this.

Glad to see I am not alone on this. This is one of the main things that keeps me from moving to RTM

I am new to RTM and the lack of this one feature has kept me from really loving it. This is very sorely needed.

jansona says:
I've hacked around this using priorities and occasionally alphabetic prefixes, but I'd much prefer it be built in. Any solution however would need to work in the "auto-generated" views from clicking on the tag cloud, because that's how I navigate 90% of the time. (those views currently default to by-priority.)

Yes please! As projects get more intense, we need a better way to set priority and basecamp-like drag-n-drop ease is the answer.
Would ditch Basecamp and become even more of a RTM evangelist :)

I come browsing the forums JUST to see if there is any news on this being developed. It is seriously all that is missing from RTM for me. It seems so basic!

This is the single most important feature for any todo list I use, besides sync. I love the idea of syncing PC to blackberry/android/iphone. I'm downloading the milksync now, and am sorely tempted to start a pro subscription.
But where's the manual sync??

Agree with "most important missing feature" comments. Kinda puzzles the mind that even a simple 'up for grabs' database element - sort-able! - that each user could use as s/he sees fit, is not included [while a more elaborate feature might or not be considered]. RTM is a fantastic product. This would make it phenomenal.

newmilkentry says:
A couple of years ago I would have said yes to this without hesitation. Now, having tried most of the well-known task managers, I'm not so sure. I do quite well without manual sorting, mainly by using "next" tags and dates where appropriate. I can see the attraction of manual sorting, but another thing the developers would have to consider is that it would probably have to be implemented on all the platforms to avoid annoying inconsistencies for the user.

+1 to manual sorting :)
Many tasks consists of several subtasks which must be done in a sequence (e.g. in the same day, so sorting by Due Date doesn't help).

Wow, I'm coming over from Things (just signed up for pro) and I'm amazed this isn't possible... it just seems so basic that in a daily list of say 30 things I would want a few of them at the top.

drag-n-drop manual sort plus a customized sorting function (much like the advanced search today) plus the ablity to sort on tags and parts of tags (regex matching would be great) should do it for me! I use tags for everything, and use the tag cloud for filtering, but lacks the sorting.

I totaly agree... I was wondering that it´s not possible to drag and drop manualy. especially when you have many task on one day with same prioity its important for me to sort the task within the same prio and work on the tasks from top to buttom

A huge vote for manual ordering of tasks in a list. For me, this is the #1 missing feature of RTM, and apps such as Nozbe and Vitalist do this with ease (but they have other problems).
I use "A Bit Better RTM", which should be made the default UI for all browsers. RTM is impossible without it.

+1 for this feature, absence of which has led me away from RTM years ago. Would like to come back, but in spite of a huge request list over a long period, the absence of any semblance of forward motion on this point is not encouraging. Please RTM -- you have a superb product otherwise.

I believe that less is more, however I agree with the comments above, the value of manual sorting is undeniable for daily work. People often have many tasks of same priority, but the importance/urgency can easily change anytime. Drag+drop sorting would make RTM simply amazing.
