While it is basic, and while it doesn't support specifying secondary (and tertiary) sorting order, not only is top-level sort by date a huge improvement IMO, but I appreciate that it seems to default to using priority as the secondary sorting field when you do sort by date.

I also appreciate that it seems to remember your sort preference per list, and across logins.

Oh happy day! I think this will be a real boon to new users, who are likely to expect a date-sort, and for other users with complex needs who can use their own keywords and the alphabetic sorts to accomplish some clever things.

[Like zukanov, I think about multiple sorting criteria, and I also think about sorting by other criteria (e.g., location, creation date, etc., but those are refinements.]

The forum regulars will have to pick up a new "cause" now that sorting is there. Thanks! I love that it is per list/smartlist. This will add a new level of organization for us all to take advantage of.

A custom sorting option would be nice: Sorting by Drag & Drop.

I still believe sorting according to a tag prefix would be neat. I.e set tag-prefix to be "p-" or "@" in the settings-section, and choose "tag-prefix" as sorting option, and RtM would sort the list according to the rest of the tag matching the given prefix.

Such a sorting option could be used to further extend the GTD scheme within RtM, as it could be used in the combination of a smart search on tags starting with "@ " denoting location, and then using the sort option to sort it alphabetically within the location. Or similarily with "p-" as prefix, denoting that a task tagged with "p-something" belongs to the project "something".

And this would easily allow those of us wanting to have lists in two levels.

(And to really top it of, it would be great to have the option to display a intermediate title whenever the prefixed tag changed, i.e from "p-something" to "p-tada")

+1 for sort by Date Added - I assume this is equivalent to Rambarton's suggestion of sorting by 'creation date'.

I'm pulling for sort by tag. Right now, in order to do this, I have to put the "project" as the first word of the task in order to see things together in a list (search is nice, but then I'd have to search for each individual tag of my work projects - not nearly as easy or fast as running my eyes down one list). Having the tag functionality is great, but seeing tasks grouped my way is more important, so I just end up using my own "tag prefix" method instead of RTM's tag functionality.

Forget fancy sorting, I agree with this thread, Sorting by due date doesn't properly sort day's tasks. Showing my immediate action items (and potentially overdue items) above my items with a time seems like the wrong implementation of sorting.

The solution here, I suppose would be giving much more sort control to the user.

Is the sort functionality not handled via the client's browser? I can take a look at the massive amount of JS to verify it, but I would venture a guess that it does.

I don't know whether building multi-level sort functionality (if the user's thought process requires it) is a monumental task on the dev-end but for anyone using RTM for GTD, it seems to me that not allowing for FIFO breaks (or at least contorts) the system.

Is there any chance I could get an ETA for it?

Addendum: I do recognize that GTD is functional with both FIFO and LIFO systems but I think giving the user the ability to make that decision will only make RTM a more useful product.

How about: Sorting by hand? Drag and drop the tasks the way you want?

A sort that I'd be interested in is a date sort with most recent first. (What I really want is a way to get a list of tasks due X days before today, but the next best thing would be being able to sort my overdue list to put the most recently missed tasks on top.)

I like it, but sorting by due date puts tasks that are due at specific times below tasks due at nonspecific times (which are equivalent to midnight). This seems to run contrary to expected behavior, at least for me.

Please enable sort by tag (s)! We really need to have a view of all tasks grouped together based on their tag (s).

Any way to change the default sort for all of your lists on your account, e.g., Due Date instead of Priority?

Sometimes I forget to put a due date on a task, and it falls to the bottom of my date sorted list. How about an option to list items that are missing a date higher than a due date that is more than 3, 6 or 12 months out?

@bweech If you build a smartlist that includes tasks with dates due within 3 months, or that have no due date, you can see just what you are after and not have future events eclipse things. Works pretty well.

I super-ultra-second drag-and-drop sorting. Really. For me, RTM is the perfect todo app except for this nagger.

Definitely the ONLY "nagger" about RTM to me. Sometimes I want to sort my lists in the order I plan to do them that day, and despite attempting to work with what the current set up gives me, I can never think of a satisfactory solution besides drag and drop.

Also, it would be nice if you could choose in date-sorting whether undated todo's came at the top or bottom of the list. My undated todos tend to be "sooner" rather than "later" types of tasks (and I sometimes date things YEARS into the future), so I'd like the undated ones at the top.

Agreed, an undated task in my list means it can be done anytime, and the dated ones are usually specific. I'd like to see the undated tasks above the dated ones (unless ofcourse the dated task is today or past due)

I very much desire more and better sorting, too, but… while we wait for that, you can use a smartlist to suppress items far in the future, so they don't swamp out the undated items you want to see now.

Sorting by tags, with splitters or something would be nice...

Why can I/we not sort a task manually ??

I just want to order the list by drag/drop a task higher or lower?

I'd also like undated to dos at the top of the list. the all tasks which is my default view so I can see everything i need to do is so long it flows off the bottom of my screen so I never see the undated ones.

I have many recurring tasks so despite completing them they just pop up later down the list so my list doesn't shrink much.

since I'm a pro and my vote is +2 i'll say PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE for manual sorting. drag and drop would be ideal.. but i'd settle for an old school move up, move down option.
