PLEASE - Restore functionality

benster says:
I've been a Pro user for a while now and have renewed once already (mainly because of MilkSync). I read in another thread RTM officially responding to someone who said they had fat fingered a bunch of their tasks who asked if they could be restored. They were told that RTM can't handle individual restore requests in general and that we were encouraged to do backups of our data. I agree, in principal.

About a week ago, our Exchange servers at work had some issues and I couldn't connect. Before the issue was reported, I tried removing and re-adding my ActiveSync profile - which deleted my tasks. Before I could turn off auto-syncing in MilkSync, it synced - and deleted all my RTM tasks (for the lists I have set to sync, which is most of them).

I am NOT blaming RTM or MilkSync for this. I could have turned off auto-syncing within MilkSync first. However, I do have a request and a beef. I do an automatic backup of my tasks every night, cull them after two weeks and they get automatically backed up for me both locally and off-site via CrashPlan to two backup buddies locally and one out of state. In short, my data is very, very safe. The problem is that I never checked on a restore functionality. I cannot BELIEVE that there is not a restore for the iCal data that we are encouraged to backup. My solution should have been: restore my backup. Instead it was:

- Create a Todoodle account
- Restore the iCal
- Export it as a CSV
- Format it
- Email it into my bulk email address for RTM
- Move tasks around to different lists and re-tag them from memory and the iCal data for 3 hours

Of course, I could have reformatted the iCal data but this was quicker. And I *seriously* considered stopping after step 2 above. Please, please PLEASE add a standard restore of the iCal data so that we users (who are doing the "right thing" according to you guys) can ensure that we have the safety of our data in the event something goes terribly wrong.

And yes, I considered waiting for our Exchange issues to be rectified and then see what happened. However, it took a few days for it to come up and I didn't want to wait that long as I run my life and business on the backbone of RTM. I also have issues with MilkSync sometimes when RTM is not the system of record for a task so I had my doubts regarding how it would sync up once the Exchange server came back up. I think there is a decent possibility that it would have synced up just fine.

The fact that I didn't stay with Todoodle should be the positive theme from this post - however, this has got to be functionality that is on the radar of the team. Especially when the message from RTM seems to be that your iCal backup is your way of avoiding data loss.

ufff... thats harsh...
couldnt you hit "undo" after the sync? That would have been my nº1 defense mechanism.

Still, I cant believe you cant restore with the iCal...! After a forum search, I found similar problems:

I support this absolutely!
