You should be able to set your widget when adding it: once you place it on your home screen you should be shown a menu that lets you choose the view—built-in views, lists, and Smart Lists—that shows in the widget.

Honestly I tried and tried a couple times and smart lists never showed up under "Specific List". But now today it is working. I must have been dreaming. Sorry, false alarm :) Thanks for the response
