My mobile network isn't supported for SMS alerts. I sync my iPhone to iCal so all the relevant information is on my phone - but there's no alarm.

When you subscribe to the calendar there are check boxes to allow you to remove alarms. Could you make it so the the tasks with due times get an alarm set for the '.... before task is due' ?
