RTM Tool for Windows

(closed account) says:
Hi,

I created a small application using the RTM API to quickly add tasks to your RTM account.

This is a beta version and I'm still working on other features. Feel free to use it but don't blame me for bugs or problems in your data. (I don't expect heavy problems because it adds only single tasks to your data).

Bug reports or feature suggestions are welcome. Post them here (as answer to this post) or write a mail to: timo@pijnappel.de

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download: http://www.pijnappel.de/RTMTool_Setup.zip
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Current Features:

- Runs silent in the system tray
- Uses a configurable hotkey to open the quick add window
- The task field tries to determine a due date (e.g. tomorrow, next week)
- The task field tries to determine a location (location name)
- The tags field suggests existing tags while typing
- Multiple Tags can be added by pressing enter after each tag
- Select a list from the dropdown box

You can log in to RTM using the settings dialog (right click the tray icon and choose "Settings"). To use RTM Tool it is required to authorize it at RTM. This will happen during your first login. A new browser opens where you can approve "API_TOOL" (I will request a change of that name soon ;-) ) as trusted API application. After login go back to the settings dialog and click finish login.

Now you are ready to go :-)

To use a hotkey for opening the quick add dialog go to the settings dialog and click the choose button. Then press the desired key combination (I use Alt + Space).

By now there is no option to automatically launch the tool at windows startup (I will add this soon). You can do this anyway by copying the shortcut from your desktop to your startup folder.

Have fun :-D

I tried this and it completely seized up RTM for me on Firefox. If I start FF and then go into RTM, it just hangs and freezes FF and whatever other tabs I have open.

This doesn't happen when I use IE7 -which is what I am using at the moment - bt it will be a PITA if I have to kick start IE every time I want to use RTM.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Installed & authorised OK.
Tool logs in OK (Tool can see my tags & lists). Crashes as soon as hit "Add".

Same fault on Vista Ultimate SP1 & XP SP3.

@kevincumbria: that's odd, I tried it using IE, Firefox (also v. 3.0) and it should have no effect on them because it doesn't use IE or FF in any way. Can you describe your problem a bit more detailed? Does it happen if you uninstall the tool (after reboot)?

@david.peacock I'll try tor reproduce your crash an look into it. I have already an idea why this could happen.

I uploaded an update to fix 2 problems:

- Tool now doesn't crash when clicking add and no locations are defined in RTM
- Tool shutdown sequence was reworked to close it down completely

Download link is the same:

If you have installde the tool uninstall it first then install the new version.

Excellent tool, inline adding of due date and locations - nice!
Also like that tasks appear immediately in RTM, no lag as in e-mailed based solutions.

Great work!

Any plans in adding an automated update to the utility?

Automated update is a good idea to supply minor bug fixes or new features. I will think about it :-)

Thanks for your suggestion.

Confirm running OK with the latest build :-)

Looks like your "locations" fix solved the issue; I don't use them.

Hi, it's very basic information really, Yesterday morning RTM worked,. I came home, read about the add on, installed it and whenever I tried to access RTM via FF3 after that it just totally seized the browser. I uninstalled it and again tried to access RTM - no joy. I could access it, however, with IE7.

Did a basic uninstall and reinstall of FF3 - still no joy,. Had to do ma complete uninstall and manually delete some stuff in various application data folders and then did a complete reinstall of programs and extensions and I could access RTM again.

I'm almost sure that this was not caused by the RTM Tool. The tools only requirement is the Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0. It doesn't use Firefox or IE components at all. There are also no files in application data used by rtm tool, just one exe and one dll...that's it.

I think such a problem could be caused by an incompatible Firefox Add-In. I tried to reproduce the error on different machines but had no luck. Anyone else having similar errors?

Hi Pijnappel,

Great tool. Fast and elegant and keyboard friendly. Well done.

One thing I've noticed is that, if I leave it running for a while then try to shutdown Windows, Windows won't shut down. However, if I exit RTM Tool, then I can shut down.

This only happens if RTM Tool has been running for a little while. If I start up my PC and RTM Tool starts up automatically, then try to shut down straight away, the PC will shut down.

Might be something you want to look into. FYI, I run Windows XP (Service Pack 2).

Cheers,

Dougal

Hi Timo

Great tool, I started using it a couple of days ago and now it is real easy way of adding tasks.

One major downside though is that I am using priorities a lot. Can you add the possibility of setting the priority together with task name and list.

Another comment: I don't use the tagging option. So I would prefer priority instead of tags. But I don't how the statistics are among users.

Thanks, Kenneth

Tags are vital to me - I rely on them for every task. I use priorities, too, so it would be nice to have that option as well.

However, I can't use the tool in its current state. Unfortunately, it crashes frequently when I click the Add button. It doesn't freeze Firefox, as some others have reported - only the tool crashes. (The task doesn't actually get added to RTM.)

excellent tool, works really well and i love in-line locations and dates. support for priorities would be great e.g. shorthand notation p1,p2,p3

Great job Timo !
I'll confirm what dougal said about it preventing windows shutting down.
Other than that you've just added a new dimension to RTM for me :-)

Excellent app. Thanks!

One question: Everytime I enter a task and press "ADD", the input window disappears.

Any way to keep it from disappearing so I can make multiple entries while doing a "minddump" ?

Thanks again!

Hey, great tool. I have noticed a couple of things which would be worth looking at if a new version is going to be published:

1) Prevents windows shutting down
2) It often pops a window saying that the app couldn't connect to RTM... normally during startup or coming out of sleep.

Other than that, it is a great app.
Thanks

Hi pijnappel,

It's a great app but I also find it prevents Windows shutting down. I have to manually shut down RTM tool first before I can shut down.

Awesome tool!

I have the same issue as zakholdsworth - within the last 2 weeks or so I've been getting the 'Can't connect' message, and (not logged in to RTM) message on the quickadd popup.
The only solution that has worked is reinstalling.
I have RTM tool on all my computers (XP Pro, XP Pro, XP Home and Millenium) and only seem to have the problem on one of the XP Pros.

Any insight as to how solve would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Everything was working fine, and then suddenly a few days ago, I gert the following error message, when RTM Tool starts.

"There was a problem retrieving data from your account. Please try again later. "

This has happened on all the PC's I use it on, so it is not isolated to a single machine.

I have no idea where exactly the problem lies -- but I would be happy to do some troubleshooting/testing if you need me to -- just let me know.

I've got the same issue as bdb4269.

Happens very consistently now, which renders the RTM tool useless :(

bbeetle says:
For a little while, I was able to solve my problem by runing the .msi install file again, and choosing repair, and deleting and reauthorizing the service in RTM.

It worked rather reliably to fix it, when it randomly messed up for a little while. But now, I am just getting random error's, that I can't solve reliably any particular way. And on 2 of my PC's, I cant solve it at all.

I also got a different error on one of my PC's -- where the RTM site would normally give the authorized message, when you would normally go back to RTM tool and say "finish login" but instead the RTM site would say:

"Uh oh... something went wrong. Don't worry though; it's not your fault. The application you're using to interact with Remember The Milk made an error. It might be worthwhile contacting the author of the application and telling them you encountered this page."

I am wondering if the problem is that I use it on many different PC's.

@markwilliams12: do you use multiple PC's?

How about everyone else -- do you use multiple PC's? Have you had problems?

Hi pijnappel,

If you are not interested in maintaining RTM Tool, would you by chance be willing to share the source?

I used RTM tool on 2 computers without problems until last week. Now when I try to log in to he RTM site I get a message:

"Uh oh... something went wrong. Don't worry though; it's not your fault. The application you're using to interact with Remember The Milk made an error. It might be worthwhile contacting the author of the application and telling them you encountered this page."

I don't know if something has changed at the RTM site. I tried reinstalling RTM Tool, but that didn't solve the problem

jeff.carswell says:
I'm also having problems. When I go to add a task it says not logged in to RTM, but when I go to settings is says I am logged in.

I've tried logging, in / out, restart, etc.

Also on start up of the program I get - Error reading lists - there was a problem retrieving data from your account, followed by Error Reading Tags - there was a problem retrieving data from your account.

rfahy says:
I get the same message -- There was a problem retrieving data from your account. Please try again later. " -- every time I turn on my computer. However, the tool still works. Still, it's annoying to have that message on boot-up.

Pijnappel -- are you still maintaining this product. You have had several messages on this board in the last month about bugs, but you haven't responded to anything since last June.

@bdb4269

I do use multiple PC's. There was a day or two last week (~Dec 13th) where this worked again, but now it has stopped. I get get errors that both my tags and lists can't be read.

I've started using Executor to post items to RTM as shown here:
http://www.howtotuts.com/2008/08/21/how-to-add-a-task-to-your-rtm-from-executor/

But I find that method to be far inferior to the RTM Tool as it only allows posts to the Inbox and I can't figure out how to set locations or tags to a task.

Hi all,
I'm sorry but I'm not going to continue development on RTM Tool. I developed it for my personal use but I didn't use it much. The problems could be caused by changes in the RTM API, but I don't know that for sure.

I don't have the time to dig deeper into these problems but I am willing to share the source code. If you are familiar with .Net (C#) development contact me by mail ( timo@pijnappel.de )

I, for one, am very sad to see this nifty little app go away. I had this installed on my work computer - with the keyboard shortcuts to Quick Add and the inline tag and list assignment I found this tool to be amazingly useful. Throughout the day, as new tasks came across my desk, I would jot a quick task and when it was due. As I completed things, I'd bring up RTM and check them off.

Unfortunately I'm not a coder, so I can't do anything with the source code. I am wondering if there is another, similar, app out there that streamlines the RTM interface like this. I looked into Milkify, but my company has me on a Windows 2000 machine, and Milkify requires at least XP. I'm still using RTM all the time, but it is somewhat more clunky without the RTM Tool to help.
