Tidy up...

Hello everybody,

(I apologize for my bad english, but I just had to share this trick, since I really am enthusiastic - which is much for a german guy :) )

After some time using RTM in a GTD way I ended up in some kind of a mess: There were about 1000 overdue tasks and I couldn't use RTM anymore the way it was meant to be.

So I thought about a way to solve this without having to edit all the overdue tasks manually.

After some programming I had built a little script which flips the overdue tasks horizontally: The closer in the past, the closer in the future.
Now I got these 1000 overdue tasks spread over the next three month, starting with the tasks, which were due just yesterday, being due now tomorrow. Each task has a note ("flipped on ... from ... to ...) added, so that I can recognize these tasks if I see them.

No overdue tasks any more! Just perfect for me!
It really works fine and I am very happy. Now I got a new chance to keep my RTM lists clean!

(If anyone is interested I will be happy to provide the code, but you will have to customize it... :-) )

well loved to, but the only things which can be seen are:

1. before: you have a lot of overdue tasks, after: you have those tasks been spread over the future
2. these tasks will have a note added saying: "Tidy up from (date): postponed task from (old due date) to (new due date)"

I made a screenshot for the second point, but, hm, how can I add it?

Was this what you asked about?

See, there's a reason for not adding due dates to tasks that really don't have due dates, just an ASAP (whenever that is).

What is the reasoning behind having the most overdue tasks (furthest in the past) go to furthest in the future? Logic like "If I've put it off this long, I guess it can wait for that much longer..."?

thanks for your replies!

@rajjan: well I don't think so. I think, tasks which really have a due date - in a sense, that it should be done then - should go to the calendar (which is GTD).
I understand the due date as "I want to be remembered at this date" and well if I have time, I will do this then, or postpone...
Tasks without a due date are just a big huddle for me. Or how do you manage that?

@rossruns: yes, something like that, the more important tasks will be done, but those which could wait, are postponed futher. I also added the feature to customize the sorting...
