Setting goals and sub-goals in RTM

mindgardener says:
I have been using RTM for sometimes, and it is a cool product.

One thing I wanted to do was to set goals, and track subtasks in the goal. I have the option to create a list for each goal, and then add my subtasks to it. I tried this, however I found my lists gets longer, especially with the Smart lists I have.

So, I came up with a new way to solve this problem. Here is what I did

First I created a list called "Milestone - 2011" (To track all my 2011 milestones and results). You can name this "My Goals", or any name you choose.

After I created the list "Milestone - 2011", I added my first goal this way

..1. Finish the article I am writing and publish to my blog

Then my second goal

..2. Send gifts to my family
..3. Attend the upcoming motivational workshop

Adding ".." at the start makes sure it remains at the top and the number makes sure it maintain the order in which it is entered.

Now, adding subtasks, I added like this

..1.1 - Research the material I want to write
..1.2 - Write first draft
..1.3 - Finish the draft and sent for editing
..1.4 - Publish the article to my blog

..2.1 - Choose the gift I want to sent
..2.2 - Purchase the gift
..2.3 - Send the gift via post

..3.1 - Register for the event
..3.2 - Make arrangement for Hotel stay and transportation
..3.3 - Attend the event and fully be present there.

As you see, I added subtasks by giving it sub-numbers to the main number. And they are preceded by the "..". When you do this, you can see the goals and subgoals being shown in hierarchical way.

And on top of this, I set priority to my main goals by !1, !2, !3 etc, and work on my !1 priorities while I can always come to this list to see all my milestones (goals/subgoals) for the year.

I can tag each main goal with @main_2011, and at the end of year, I can see a report of what I accomplished in the year !

Thanks,
Mind Gardner
