Using a network monitor such as Nagios with RTM for incident review

tim.vaughan says:
I'm a sysadmin, managing an estate of around 20 servers, routers and other network kit. Currently, we're using Nagios (nagios.com) to monitor our hardware and send me email alerts if something untoward happens.

Recently I've added my RTM address to the list of email addresses that are sent alerts. I've added my RTM address to the Nagios "contacts.cfg" file (if you have multiple sysadmins who are all using RTM, you can create a specific group for them in contacts.cfg). A sample config is below:

define contact{
contact_name admin_rtm
service_notification_period 24x7
host_notification_period 24x7
service_notification_options w,u,c,r,f
host_notification_options d,u,r,f
service_notification_commands notify-service-by-email
host_notification_commands notify-host-by-email
email unique_address@rmilk.com
}

Now, if I get any alerts from Nagios they're automatically added to my RTM inbox for incident review the following day.

You can play around with the email template to route Nagios alerts to a specific list in RTM, and include the alert text as a note for the item.
