CoffeeMilk: Another RTM Desktop Application

amen.hamdan says:
Hi all,

for my personal entertainment and to help me get more productive with RTM, I implemented my own little RTM desktop client. It mainly mimics my personal GTD workflow and has currently the following features:
1. quickly add tasks via RTM smart add
2. move tasks quickly between lists via drag and drop
3. quickly change priority (just click on the priority field to open a pop-up menu for that)
4. quickly edit task names and due dates (just click on the edit button on the right of a row, RTM smart date is supported)
5. Sort tasks by name/duedate/priority

My personal feature/wish list (which I will implement sooner or later) contains
- support to edit tags
- task notes support
- support for smart lists

The application is 100% pure Java and should run on any OS that features at least Java 1.6 (tested it on Win7 and Fedora 12 so far). I would call it stable Alpha, so please handle with care. The application is open source and freely available for anyone to use.

Anyone interested, might have a look at:
http://code.google.com/p/coffeemilk/

So far, I only build JAR files for download (which should run on any system with a proper JRE installation).

And yes, I know that other applications exist and that this will be one to add, but none of the existing apps really met my personal needs and I did it for the sake of doing it.

Cheers & Feedback welcome!

It seems my application is either seriously broken or no one cares about desktop clients as much as myself. :-)

Anyhow, I added notes edit support (here gain according to my personal requirements/needs). Any number of notes for various tasks can be open and edited at the same time. Notes creation and deletion are also supported.

Even though no one seems to care, here is my personal todo list for CoffeMilk (coming up next):
- offline sync
- smart lists
- printing support (tasks + notes)

If you any feedback, please let me know - I am currently working on offline sync and performance updates. However since I haven't received much feedback so far, I am doing this on low prio (since the current feature set is doing well for me).

Any feature of particular feature request? I will add this first. ;-)

Just tried it out on Mac OS 10.6. Seems to work just fine.

I like the general idea of the collapsing lists. The compactness of it is wonderful! It feels even more straightforward than RTM itself (which is pretty amazing).

I'd like to see support for viewing by tag or due date (today, next 7 days, next month, no date, etc). Editing a task is very awkward, enough that I probably would abandon the app quickly.

Sorting by list only is pretty limiting, especially since the tasks I need to do in a day overlap lists. That's where smart lists become important for me. Without support for smart lists, it's really not much use to me.

Thanks for the feedback!

I am actually a Mac user since a month or two and even though I used CoffeeMilk daily on my Windows machine, I do not use it that often anymore on Mac. The Java stuff looks clumsy on Mac. I am right now a bit hesitating and wondering if I either should spend the time on updating CoffeeMilk or if I should write CocoaMilk (native Mac app). Interest in both seems to be overall limited, so it would be more or less only for a few of us.

Hello - Like the concept of your app. Working on Windows XP, it installed just fine linking with my RTM account. However, once the setup was completed, the app launched indicating Loading Data, but never completed.

I think there's plenty of interest in a native Mac app, in fact there's another thread with plenty of people who want one.

RTM lacks a high-quality, customizable UI. I'd love an app that operated like Things (http://culturedcode.com/things/) for my mac (office machine) that synced with RTM so I could continue to use my android phone and the web interface on my home PC.

@digitap - you can send me an email at (see http://code.google.com/p/coffeemilk/people/list) and we can try to fix your problem

@mmorowitz: I saw the other thread but having a full fledged task management like things might be too much effort to implement part time.

Any chance of supporting Smart Lists in this app? I only use smart lists and this makes practically any desktop app useless for me. Thanks!

Seems I will be be making an update to the app soon. Here we go with the wish list so far:
- Smart Lists
- Sorting by due date (+ tags?)

I will also check if it is feasible to make the app look at bit better on MacOS.

@ plainclothes: any suggestions on how to improve the task editing?

This is something I always wanted.

Just want to know, any plans of making it an Adobe Air app? Can plan for a richer UI.
