I'm using the RTMAgent Perl module combined with a cron job to email custom notifications of some of my lists:

I use for that pourpose Gmail with an easy system:
When I send a to-do to a coleague, the subject starts by qwe.37 (where the number is the week I have to check if it has been done).
I made a filter for all the emails with "qwe" in the subject to be taged with "waiting".
Just going to this tag, I can see all the task in "waiting for" state.
Every monday I make a search with tag:waiting and qwe.37 (the number of the week ) and I see all the reminders I have to send.
When I receive a response, I just take the tag out and that's all :o)
