Following up on sent email

Hello,

this one is a submission for tips & tricks tuesday.

(I use mac os x snow leopard, mail.app as email program)

I use RTM a lot for following up on sent email I need a reply for by a specific date. Until now i copied the email subject, pasted that in RTM fluid.app (if you don't use this one, check it out, it's perfect in combo with iPhone and Gears), added the person that needed to reply, added due date and saved the task.

I just discoverd a great new way of adding email follow up, using custom signatures in mail.app. First you need to add a custom signature that includes all RTM specific information in your email program (i use mail.app, but i assume any would do that supports adding custom signatures). Mine looks like this:

T:
D:
S: mailfup
---

When i want to follow up on an email i do the following:
1. just send the email as you would do normally
2. go to the sent items, and forward the email to your RTM mail address.
3. add the custom signature above and fill in the RTM info, in my case this is due date (D), task name (standard the subject of the mail is taken as task name, i just copy in the recipient as well, but this is optional really, you'll remember to whom you've sent that email when you see the task name being the subject of the email), the S is a tag that i use for setting mails i need to follow up in RTM, --- means that everything below that is a note to the task in RTM, so i have all info within RTM when i open up the task.

What would even be better is for RTM to be able to capture tasks added via email with specified due date, tags, etc. This way you won't need to resend the email, but just BCC your RTM mail address when you send the email.

Keep up the good work with RTM and make my life easier to manage! :)

Joris.

Interesting tip - but what do you mean, when you write: "What would even be better is for RTM to be able to capture tasks added via email with specified due date, tags, etc"? How does this goal differ from what you have already described?
