Adding tasks via SMS text message

smnhicks says:
I've been trying to find a way to quickly add tasks to RTM when I'm on the move ... my mobile phone makes it incredibly complex to send an email and the internet access is flaky at best.

Anway, I've found a company that convert SMS text messages into emails for free which means I can now text message tasks into my RTM inbox.

Basically, you send an SMS to 07766 40 41 42 with the body of the message as

[Your RTM Inbox Email Address] [Message] -end-

This will add a new task to your inbox. Unfortunately, the task title is "Message sent from mobile number xxxxxxx" but the task is created and your message is stored in the task notes field.

If you forget to put -end- at the end of your message then your task will include a load of advertising from the provider. With my mobile, I can create a text message template so I have one set-up with my inbox email address and -end- in it to make adding these tasks as slick as I can make it.

The url for the provider is http://sms2email.com/site/sms2email.php#

There's another company that will do this and your task name will NOT be "Message sent from mobile number xxxxxxx". I believe they are called Twitter.

Also, most phones will send an sms directly to an email address.

Unfortunately, sending sms messages to Twitter is not possible from my phone and it treats my inbox email address as invalid (because of the +) so this is the one way I've found of being able to do this.

I'll take your word for it, but you've peaked my curiosity. Why can't you send text messages to Twitter? I'm trying to think of a scenario where that wouldn't be possible and none comes to mind unless it was a phone that wouldn't do SMS at all.

Another option might be to create a gmail account just for your RTM inbox, have gmail automatically forward the messages, thus eliminating the "+" when sending from your phone. This way you still get a task without the extra verbage added.

I have a scenario: Walmart Family Mobile does NOT support SMS from or to short codes. To send/receive sms to/from Twitter, you HAVE to use Twitter's short code 40404. There is no long code yet (Nov. 19, 2011).
