I need recurring tasks, but I really want an empty list after they're done.
It drives me insane that a recurring task never leaves the list after they're done, and I really like to see my list empty when there's nothing else that can be done RIGHT NOW.
I set up a list that contains the recurring tasks (weekly household errands such as laundry and grocery shopping, or even bi-weekly ones).
I then set up a smart list called
Weekend with the clause (list:"Household Weekly" AND dueBefore:Tuesday) and after I've done laundry for the week, it goes away!

You could look into the sleeper tag method, described here:

It hides tasks in smart lists until 1 day/2 days/1 week etc before they are due.
It also annoyed me that a recurring task showed up right after it was completed, I like the lists to be filled with things I can actually do something about.

randyn says:
A simpler option is to create and save a smart list using something similar to:
dueBefore:now OR dueWithin:"10 days of today"
After saving this list, just use this as your main list.
