Sorting a grocery list by aisle
davidscottweaver says:
This tip is painfully easy, but I think effective. My wife and I share a grocery list that we can update together. We primarily use one grocery store to do our shopping, so I decided to incorporate the aisle number into the grocery item itself.
01 Ice Cream
02 Milk
05 Peanut Butter
12 Coffee
etc.
The list is sorted by task name so that when you go to the grocery store, you start at aisle 1 and only hit the aisle you need. If you don't know the aisle something is in, just rename the task after you find it and before you check it off the list. That way, when you run out of items at home and need to un-complete them from the list, the aisle is already there.

Brilliant in it's simplicity!

I don't know much about much. But why not leverage tags here?
Off the top of my head, something like:
1) Make a list named "GroceryItems"
to it add...
milk #1.store1 #3.store2 #8.store3 #grocery.dairy #grocery.yucky
laxative #10.store1 #7.store2 #null.store3 #OhCrap!
Beer #4.store1 #6.store2 #9.store3 #yummy
then you add a tag like #gl (for grocery list) to each needed item
then do a search for whatever store you intend to go to:
tagContains:"store1" AND tag:gl
and you get the list:
Milk 1.store1
Beer 4.store1
Laxative 10.store1

I found a generic list some developer was using and I mixed&mashed it up in vim to make the tags auto-lookup friendly.
