Supervising Young Children's School Work
bunnieboop says:
I have two elementary school age children. Occasionally they get school projects that require a few weeks to complete. Being young kids, they have no idea of how to break down the project into small manageable tasks. So, Mom has to help with that.
I set up a list in my RTM for each of my children. Then when one of them has a project to do, I break it down into small manageable tasks. Each task is small enough to do in 30 minutes or less. Then I add each task to the child's list setting the due date as they day I will have them work on it. If there is a specific requirement then I add that information as a note. As the child finishes each small task, I mark it complete in RTM. This way, the child starts to learn time management and gets their work done. Even better they don't get frustrated so we do not have to deal with crying.
For example:
My 3rd grader recently had a poetry project. I broke it down like this:
1. Select poem. Due March 5
2. Read poem and develop mental image. Due March 8
3. Write paragraph explaining mental image. Due March 9 Note: The paragraph must be at least 3 sentences.
4. Ask parent to edit paragraph. Due March 10. Note: Check spelling and punctuation.
5. Copy paragraph in best handwriting. Due March 11
6. Draw and color mental image. Due March 13
7. Copy poem. Note: include title and poet. Due March 15
8. Memorize poem. Due March 19. Note: He has to recite the poem to the class.
