Please note: The new version of Gmail is required. You have the new version if you see an "Older version" link at the top right in Gmail.
1. Click the install button above. You may see the following message at the top of the page:
![]()
If you see this message, click the "Edit Options..." button, then "Allow", then "Close", and click the install button again.
2. Click the "Install Now" button in the dialog. The Firefox add-ons window will appear confirming the installation.
3. After you have installed the extension, please close all open Firefox windows and restart your browser.
4. Open Gmail, and you'll see Remember The Milk for Gmail :)
Once installed, you'll see a tasks pane on the right in Gmail. You can customise which tasks are shown (with options to filter based on list, Smart List, tag, location, or advanced search criteria) and decide how to sort and group your tasks. Adding new tasks is easy. Just enter your task in the box provided -- feel free to include when it's due and any tags, too.

You can add tasks like:
Pick up the milk
Call Lizzie at 9am tomorrow
Return library books in 2 weeks
Finish report, tag with work
To complete, postpone, delete, or view and edit a task's details, just move your mouse over a task in the list.

If you change your mind, don't worry -- you can undo too.

Say you have an email that requires a follow up, or contains a task that you need to remember -- you might star this message, or maybe label it with "To Do". RTM can automatically create a task when you star a message, or label a message with a specific label.

You can change your preferences for these features by going to the Settings screen in Gmail, then clicking on Tasks.

You can also create a task from an email by selecting Create task from the More Actions dropdown.

When you're ready to reply or follow up on the email, mouse over the task details. You'll see an icon linking to the original email -- click on it to reply. Once you've sent the email, the task will be automatically completed.

Now you'll never forget to reply to Aunt Sally, or follow up with your boss about that report she emailed to you.
No need to check your calendar when setting due dates! Remember The Milk talks to Google Calendar when it detects that you're adding a task related to an event in your calendar, and automagically figures out when your task is due.

You can add tasks like:
Organize flowers 2 days before Mother's Day
Call Jimmy on Thanksgiving
Write up minutes after team meeting
Send thank you notes 1 month after my wedding
Need to remember to call or email someone? When you add tasks that start with special action keywords, followed by a person's name, RTM will automagically link up the task with the Gmail contact who it's associated with.

You can add tasks like:
Call Nathan about report tomorrow
Email Caitlin today
Ask Alice about trip to Spain
Follow up with Jason in 2 months
You'll see that your contact is linked with the task in the task details. If your task is to email your contact, just click on Email contact here to compose an email to them. Once you've sent the email, the task will be automatically completed.

Now, what if you wanted to see all tasks linked with a contact? No problem! On the Contacts screen in Gmail, just select the contact(s) you'd like to see. All the tasks linked with the contact will be displayed on the right.

Which browser do I need?
Remember The Milk for Gmail requires Firefox 2.0 or newer. It's compatible with all operating systems that support Firefox 2.0.
Which version of Gmail do I need?
You need to have the new version of Gmail, which Google is still rolling out. You have the new version if you see an "Older version" link at the top right in Gmail. If you're using an international version of Gmail, or Gmail with Google Apps, you may not have the new version yet. You'll also need to be using Gmail in US English (unfortunately we're not able to support the non-US English versions of Gmail at this time).
I don't seem to have the new version of Gmail. Is there any way I can get it?
If you're using the regular Gmail, you can switch your language to "US English" by clicking on Settings in Gmail (many users have reported that they're shown the new version after doing this). If you're using Gmail with Google Apps, it's a little trickier. You'll need to ask your Google Apps administrator to login to the control panel, and under Domain settings they'll find an option called "Turn on new application features to my domain before they are rolled out to all Google Apps customers." Once this is turned on, you should have the new version of Gmail soon.
What's a Firefox extension anyway?
Extensions are small applications that can be downloaded and installed into your Firefox browser to add new functionality (in this case, adding Remember The Milk to Gmail).
How do I change the settings for Remember The Milk for Gmail?
You'll find settings available by clicking on Settings in Gmail, then Tasks.
How do I set it to create tasks when I star or label emails?
To turn this feature on, you'll need to change your settings (by clicking on Settings in Gmail, then Tasks). You can automatically create tasks when you star emails, or label messages with a specific label, or both. With this feature, the task will also be automatically completed if you:
- 'Unstar' or remove the specific label from the message
- Reply to the message by clicking on the email icon in the task details
Can I change the default due date for my tasks?
Yes, the default due date affects starred and labeled emails, and tasks without due dates. This option is available by clicking on Settings in Gmail, then Tasks.
Can I turn off the auto-suggesting of events and contacts?
Yes, this option is available by clicking on Settings in Gmail, then Tasks.
Which list will my tasks be added to in Remember The Milk?
Tasks are added to your default list. If you don't have a default list set, or if your default list is a Smart List, they'll be added to your Inbox list.
How do I change the priority for a task?
First, move the mouse over the task to show the task details box. In the top left corner of the box (underneath the "Complete" button), you'll see a coloured ball that indicates priority. Click on this ball, and you can select another priority colour.
I don't need to see my tasks all of the time. Is there any way to hide this?
Yes, just click on the arrow to the left of the tasks pane. This will collapse the pane; you can click the arrow again to expand it.
Can I use this with multiple Gmail accounts?
Yes! Your preferences will be saved for each Gmail account that you use, so you can customize the display of your tasks for each account. For example, you may wish to show a Smart List with your work tasks in one Gmail account, and another Smart List with your personal tasks when using another Gmail account. You can also choose different options for sorting and grouping your tasks.
How do I uninstall Remember The Milk for Gmail?
In the Firefox browser, click the "Tools" menu then "Add-ons". Select "Remember The Milk for Gmail", then click the "Uninstall" button. When you restart Firefox, Remember The Milk for Gmail will be uninstalled.
It used to work for me, but suddenly the extension stopped working!
Please check that you have the latest version of the extension, as changes to Gmail require us to update our extension. To update, please go to "Tools" then "Add-ons" in Firefox, then click "Find Updates" and update the extension when prompted. Please restart Firefox following the update. If the problem continues, Google may have made changes to Gmail that we aren't supporting yet. Please tell us which aspects of the extension aren't working for you, and we can investigate further.
I'm using Firefox, but the extension isn't working.
If you're experiencing problems, please try the following steps:
I'm using another Firefox extension for Gmail, and Remember The Milk for Gmail isn't working.
There are a number of Firefox extensions and Greasemonkey scripts available that make modifications to Gmail. If you are experiencing a problem with Remember The Milk for Gmail while using another extension that modifies Gmail, we would recommend disabling the other extension, restarting Firefox, and seeing if that resolves the issue. If you do encounter an extension conflict, please tell us so that we may investigate further. However, please note that we cannot guarantee compatibility with other extensions or scripts.
My tasks stopped displaying in Remember The Milk for Gmail.
Please check to make sure that you're not filtering your tasks (e.g., only showing a particular list). This option is shown directly underneath the "Add task" field at the top of Remember The Milk for Gmail. If you're showing all your tasks, it should say "Set task view here"; if you're not showing all your tasks, you can click the arrow and change the option here.
Sometimes it doesn't auto-suggest events from my calendar, but I know they're there!
Please check to make sure that you're logged into Google Calendar; even if you're logged into your Google account, you may need to visit http://www.google.com/calendar to ensure that you're logged in. Events will only be auto-suggested after the words "on", "before", or "after" (e.g., "Call Jimmy on Thanksgiving"), so make sure that you have one of these keywords before the event name.
Please note: Remember The Milk for Gmail uses Google's experimental Gmail/Greasemonkey API. From time to time, Google may change Gmail's code in a way that affects this feature's functionality. While we endeavour to update the extension as we become aware of Gmail code changes, please note that we cannot guarantee the availability of this feature or specific aspects of its functionality.
