Can RTM be set up to automatically change !!, !" and !£ into !1, !2 and !3 respectively in the "add a new task bar". I am forever typing !£ (on a British English Keyboard) instead of !3 when setting my task priority.

I guess the !!, !" and !£ would be different for different keyboard layouts to British English but there can't be that many permutations... maybe only look for the error if there is not already a priority defined in the new task definition.
