Counter-intuitive back-key operation

I have a couple of home screen widgets which are set to show specific lists. When I click on one it takes me into the application onto that list. This is all good.

However, when I press the back key on my phone to close the list, it takes me to the Lists screen/card. I never passed through this screen to get into my list so why should I want to see it on the way out?

Please can there be some option to just close the app when I click the back button?

(on a separate note, the menu hard-key no longer seems to do anything)

Reminders for due tasks / tasks due in 1 hour

For tasks that have a due time, I have reminders set for tasks due within 1 hour and due now.

Sometimes I do not get around to a task until after the due time, in which case I still see both notifications (and if I use one of them to mark the task complete, then the other still remains).

I would suggest it is better that once the notification for a task being due, any notification for the same task being due in 1 hour should be removed.

Reminders Not Firing

The multi-edit function is still available. When you're viewing a task list, tap on the pencil icon in the upper right corner to enter multi-edit mode. You can then select multiple tasks by tapping on them, and use the icons at the bottom to make changes.

Hope this helps make the app a bit easier to use.

In the old interface, if you set your startup page to show your lists, it did just that - show your lists, and you could select the relevant list from that... list :)

As of now, it instead shows ALL tasks on ALL lists, and you have to swipe it away. I've attempted to implement a GTD system using RTM, and having to swipe away this list EVERY time you start the application on a phone is a major nuisance.

My lists are based on searches for contexts, and the natural GTD-way is to then select the appropriate context (such as@home, @work etc) from an overview of such contexts, and not get a listing of ALL tasks. Having to swipe away the list of (mostly irrelevant) tasks when you want to select a context autosearch list, is counter-intuitive and reducing the functionality for at GTD implementation.

For me the application was basically downgraded from one of the best GTD-implementable applications and websites out there - to one that I can no longer recommend. This is a shame, for I LOVE the rest of RTM - the website, the easy email-integration, shortcuts, and so on. And it works well on a tablet - but not on a phone.

I don't like the new version 3.0.14

And that's without going into the new ugly layout. This version is a major step backwards, and I regret having renewed my Pro account

I don't have any general suggestions for replacing Reader, but the Remember The Milk "share" button should be available in most apps that use Android's Share menu. We add it through our Android app to the Share menu so other apps can use it.

The list doesn't fill the width in landscape, but as you use the app, your tasks will fill the right portion of the app.

And while you can no longer swipe to edit/complete, you can now long-press on a task to complete/postpone it.

RSS Reader Sharing

As you know Google is closing down their Reader service on July 1. I have used their Reader for a long time specifically because it works so well with RTM. The mobile App has an option for "sharing" any blog positing directly with my RTM account. In other words, I can look at a blog post, read some of it or just the headlines, click "share", click the RTM icon and up comes a task page for my account and all I have to do is click done. The URL of the blog post is automatically included in the the RTM task. I can later go to the post and read it in depth.
Question: there are several alternatives for Google Reader. Does anyone know of any that integrate well with RTM?

GUI doesnt look right on tabelet

I thought I was really dumb at first cause I couldn't figure out how to edit a task but then I realized that in portrait mode the GUI is cut off and some buttons are off the screen. However in landscape it doesnt look right either. If I'm in a list. The screen only fills up about 80% on the left and I'm left with a big black area to the right.

I'm also upset we lost the swipe to edit ability.

When you select "Lists" as your Start Screen, the app should open to the Lists view with the "All Tasks" list selected. You can then see your lists by swiping this All Tasks card to the right.

This is similar to choosing a specific list: in this case, the app opens to the List view with the specific list selected. In both cases, though, the app opens showing a list of tasks rather than your list of lists.

Does this explain what you're seeing? If not, can you give me some more details?

Start Screen "Lists" not working properly in new GUI

I'm not too happy about the new GUI of the application on Android (I think it works much better on a tablet than on a phone), but something is not working as it should when you set a start screen in General Settings.

Instead of bringing up my lists (as the old GUI did), it now brings up "All tasks" instead, which is very different. I use RTM with a GTD setup, and my lists are basically saved searches based on context.

If the "This Week", or "Today", or "specific list" is chosen in the settings, the start screen shows what you expect, but brringing up the list of ALL tasks when you've set it to bring up your lists is illogical and... wrong :)

When I get a reminder for a single item in the notification bar and select it I get the item as expected.
If there are multiple items and I select them I get a screen with the left black selection bar, the light blue selection bar "showing This Week"and only an edge of the white item list.
It seems like multiple items should bring up a screen which shows the items.

Yeah, this behaviour is surprising to me and rather inconvenient. Why is it a special case for 'this week' not to show the list of tasks till I swipe it in? Now if I have a recurring task I should be able to finish it from 'this week' rather than 'all tasks' because the latter will complete the task completely. So having 'this week' show up full screen at start up is a sensible behaviour. Could you fix in the next version? Thanks! Other than that, keep on the great work!

In Russian, and I believe, the same is in other versions too, I get an error when I save a repeating task. The repeat input shortens e.g. "5 day" to "5 d." and then can not parse it. Please, ASAP implement at least a manual client language switcher for all English-speaking non-English users who suffer from this nonsense.

Start screen and back button functionality in the new version

Hey everybody - there are two aspects of the new app that are really bugging me and I thought I'd see what you guys thought.

It used to be that however you launched the app (either directly from the launcher, or by tapping one of the widgets), wherever you started in the app was really the "root" of the navigation tree for that session. What I mean by that is this if you were at that initial screen that loaded when you ran the app and you hit the back button you would close the app, but if instead you went somewhere else in the app from that screen then hit the back button on your phone, you'd go back to the screen you were previously on. It was very linear, quick, efficient and intuitive. If I tapped the widget for my shopping list, my shopping list would come up. If I tapped "back" it would close. Perfecto.

This behavior has changed in the new app, with the results depending on the start screen you choose and how you launch the app. Here's what I mean:

If you run RTM from the launcher and your start screen is "This Week", it will show you the list of days to choose from, and hitting back from there will close the app. This is the only case that seems to work as it should.

If you have any other start screen set in general settings or if you launch the app from a list / tag specific widget (my shopping list for example) and you hit back to close out of the app, you go... forward to a menu of lists? Hmm. So some of the time the workflow is "open, back to close" and some of the time it's "open, back *to somewhere I haven't been yet*, back to close"

Oddly enough the menu button on the phone does *not* open this menu (or do anything), only the back button or a swipe does. Honestly I'm fine with the menu button being dead because simply swiping left and right is just as fast and intuitive, but this weird "click back to go forward and only sometimes" thing is really throwing me off.

To complicate things a bit further...

- Setting "lists" as your start screen no longer shows you your lists so you can choose one to view, it instead shows you the "all tasks" list and you have to hit back to go forward to what you actually wanted in the first place.

- Settings "tags" as your start screen no longer shows you your tags so you can choose one to view, it instead shows you a list of *every task that has a tag* (which I can't even fathom a reason to ever look at) and you have to hit back to go forward to what you actually wanted in the first place.

Am I crazy or is this really weird? RTM folks is there any way to restore the old functionality where back really meant back, lists really meant lists (not all tasks), and tags really meant tags (not every task that has a tag)? I'm an enormous fan of this service but these weird navigation "features" really detract from the buttery smooth workflow that once was...

It looks like: if I change something on my PC and than go to RMT on my samsung I have to log in again. Not everytime anymore.

That shouldn't matter. :) You may want to reinstall the app from our site in case there's something corrupted where your login data is not being saved.

Otherwise, is it possible your Samsung S is running unofficial or rooted firmware? That can have an effect also. If so, can you try the same thing on the official firmware to compare?

As long as I stay within RTM it is ok, however, when I go to another app (mail, calender or whatever) and go back to RTM on my Samsung S I have to log in again. On my pc or tablet it is no problem.
Somehow this only happens on the device that types the least simple way...
Do you have an option or property I can set on my phone that I don't have to login all the time?

The Android app should keep you logged in indefinitely. You may want to make sure that you're not (or something else is not) clearing the app's data, as this is where the login data is stored.

I switched from reQall to RTM some month ago.
Generally I do not regret it at all, because RTM is much faster, nicer to use and has more useful and better integrated features.
I also switched because there was no development, the app did not change for month.

Unfortunately it seems to be the same here now.
I really don't understand why, because the forum is full of nice ideas and some of them could be integrated within minutes!
So whats exactly the problem, that there is no progress?
Do you have only one developer =D :-P?

Shortcuts can be added to almost every tool that enhances the navigation in android. I don't like my homescreens be cluttered with tons of widges.
Widges are overrated. They use more battery and in most cases they are just useless. I use only one widget, thats my calender. Everything else is useless. For example let's say you have 6 home screens with widges and I have my two. We both start at the main screen and want to navigate to a certain tool to put in some information. When you have reached this tool I am nearly finished putting in the information^^
I make one swipe, a toolbar opens and I directly get to what every app I want to get. ;-)

In the meantime, it'd be possible to create Smart Lists for "not added within the last week" or "not completed within the last week even though they were due", if either of those would be of interest. Let me know if you need any help with the search operators.

Sounds like you got it sorted out, but in case anyone else is wondering something similar, the Android app uses your Remember The Milk username to identify your account, not your Gmail or Google account. You can use any email address you like when you create your account.

You can duplicate tasks in the web app, but it's not possible to do in the Android app; sorry. In the web app you could select all tasks in your list and duplicate them and then move them to a new list.

If you're talking about a daily list, it could be something you could set up with repeats too… like if you want your tasks to repeat daily. I'm not sure that's what you're looking for though. :)

Thanks for your feedback. We don't have any shortcuts registered, but you can quickly add a task with any of our list widgets, our Smart Bar widget, or by adding a badge widget for adding a task; I think you'd probably prefer that last option for a quick way just for adding a task.

We'd be interested to know how you'd prefer to use a shortcut that the widget doesn't do, or what other advantages you find shortcuts have. Thanks again!

In the web app, you can add the task set to repeat daily for 3 weeks, and then duplicate it to get 5 tasks and make each due at various times throughout the day. A bit of a long way around, but then you'll have all the instances of the tasks you need.

It sounds like the tasks you're creating from the widget are inheriting their due date from your "Today" list.

When you create a Smart List with a search like due:today, any tasks you add while viewing the list will inherit those properties. This due date would take precedence over the Default Due Date defined in the app settings.

In this case, you'll need to explicitly set the due date to Never for each task to prevent it from being inherited. Alternatively, you could open the app and switch to your Inbox before adding the task. This would use your Default Due Date instead.

new to RTM and trying to get GTD functionality. One thing I am having trouble with.

I use the Android 2x2 Widget on my home screen.

I am trying to get the following behavior: On the Widget home screen I would like to see only those Tasks I have selected from my various Buckets (Lists) as actionable today, yet, when I Add A Task from the widget it "disappears" into the Inbox awaiting a Sort to the appropriate Bucket at COB.

Currently, when I Add A Task it appears on the widget home screen. It is in the correct List "Inbox" but the Due Date has overridden to "Today" instead of "Never".

I have its behavior set to

General -> Start Screen = "Specific List"
List = "Today" (a List I created)

Tasks -> Default List = "Inbox"
Default Due Date = "Never"

Its been 3 years since I read GTD so I may be a little rusty. Time to re-read?

For anyone else running into this same problem, yes, you'll need to login to the mobile apps using your Remember The Milk username and password directly. It's not possible to login with your email address, or with your Google account or Facebook account as you can in the web app.

It's not currently possible to disable Smart Add in the Android app; sorry for the inconvenience.

In our Smart Add FAQ, we do list a few examples of how to avoid it finding dates in your tasks, which is the typical problem people have with it. Hopefully one of those workarounds will help you guys adequately!

I've reset passwords and checked everything I can find.

I hate smart add! Please provide an option to turn it off on Android app.

I purchased a new Android phone (Motorola Droid Maxx HD), previously having a Motorola Droid X. Since the upgrade, I have not been able to log in to RTM using the Android App.
I am currently running Android version 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
I did uninstall and reinstall the app but I still get the error message:
"Login failed
Please check your account information and try again."

I'm using the same login information that I use to login to RTM online, so the information should NOT be incorrect.

Has anyone else had this trouble?

Syncing on multiple devices

I've been a pro member since Sep 2012 and have used RTM to great effect on my iPhone and online. Syncing between the two is seamless and I have no complaints at all.
However I have today installed the RTM android app on a tablet and although my lists are there, there are no tasks anywhere in the android app. Also, if I add a task in the android version of the app it doesn't sync with my iPhone or my online list.
To clarify, I am signed in on all three platforms.

Can anyone help/explain?

In general, Remember The Milk reminders won't continue to send if your tasks are overdue. You may be able to minimize this affecting you by having two separate tasks that repeat weekly (so you have a week to make sure you complete your tasks instead of a few days ;).

Unfortunately it doesn't alert if I've forgot to mark "done" the task once.
It alerts well only if there is no un-done task.

Once a location has been created, you won't be able to edit its position or address on any platform, sorry. You can only rename it, as you mentioned.

In order to "move" a location, you'll need to create a new location at the new address and reassign any tasks for the old location to it.

Can I dismiss a reminder for a single task? I don't want to dismiss all of them. I want to choose which one(s) to dismiss.

If I open a task from the Reminders list and change the due date to the future, the task remains in the Reminders list.

Automatic syncing is a feature that's only available with the Pro edition of the app. When using the free edition, your only option is "Manual" sync mode, as you mentioned, where you must manually perform each sync.

Widget update problem with MIUI launcher (ICS)

There is custom firmware (MIUI 2.9.29, ICS based. More info here: http://en.miui.com/) flashed on my Motorola RAZR MAXX phone. It uses it's own launcher app.

So the problem is RTM widget will only update once, when some task a added or removed and won't update any more changes until the phone is rebooted.

The app itslef shows all the changes correctly and syncs well.

Is there a way i can fix that or must i revert to the stock launcher app? Is there some sort of supported launcers list or some requirements for this widget to work the right way?

P.S.
RTM is best GTD sowtware i used. Ever. Thanks a lot.

I get this too. My timezone is US Central (Houston, TX). When I change the date for a task from today to tomorrow on Android the website (and iPhone) still shows the task as due today. If I set the date to the day after tomorrow on Android, the website and iPhone show the task as due tomorrow, but Android thinks it is due the day after tomorrow. It looks like the iPhone and the website show the same date, but the Android has a different one.

HOWEVER, when I tap on the widget, it opens "All tasks" list which still shows unscheduled tasks with high priority first. When I go to dashboard and choose Lists->All tasks, it shows everything in correct order (scheduled first).
Did I miss some configuration? How can I make "Widget->All tasks" scenario show tasks in expected order?

It sounds like you may have the list sorted by priority; changing the sort order in the Android app should change the order of the widget as well.

(You can do this in the Lists screen by long-pressing on the list, and then choosing "Edit list".)

When using web interface the scheduled tasks displayed before unscheduled tasks that have higher priority. This behaviour is convenient and expected. However in my Android widget and application itself the behaviour is the opposite: the tasks with higher priority displayed before scheduled tasks. That's not what I want. Is it possible to configure this behavour or update the Android application?

On android my task dates are one day back comapered to web version.
E.g. today is sep 14, for task which is due on sep 14 on web, android app shows that it is due on sep 13. so all my today's tasks are shown on overdue list.

Time & date are the same. Timezone too.
Tried resetting data on android, still no change.
Sync works well both ways.

That way if I have a few tasks pile up, I see each one as an individual reminder I can swipe-to-dismiss or click on to act upon? I don't think the app appears terribly outdated, but I would love to see a minor update that incorporates a software Menu button so that new devices that lack a hardware Menu button don't get the fugly black bar at the bottom to act as "Menu."

That, and swipe-to-dismiss individual reminders.

Must reply "read" in order to see text message reminders

I don't know if anyone else has this issue with their wireless service provider. I am with Rogers Wireless (equivalent to AT&T in the US) and whenever I receive a reminder through text I first get a message that reads:

"You have mail from remind@rmilk.com. Please reply with 'Read' to read your message"

I'd like to receive the message directly w/o that annoying first msg. It's not a big deal and probably has more to do with Rogers than RTM but maybe someone here knows of a quick fix.
