Color-coding tasks and repeats that end

scottydeep says:
Hello,

First off, I'd like to say that I really like RTM. It's pretty much exactly what I was looking for when I wanted to move from iCal to a web-based set of tools. Google Calendar is great, but I use to-do lists for tons of stuff.

Now, as for a couple of ideas for improvements. First, I'd like to be able to color-code tasks. For me, I'd like to have it based on task list, because I'm setting up smart lists from different lists. But probably the best way for everyone would to just be able to select one or multiple tasks, and assign a background color for each. That way, I could look at a group of tasks and know which ones are bill, work, etc. It would be a super-quick way of having a deeper understanding of what I'm seeing at a glance. The open-ended "use it however you want" idea of just being able to give a task a color would be pretty awesome.

Also, I could really use a way to set up a task that repeats until a date or for a specified number of repeats. I know that's coming pretty close to calendar functionality, but it would still be pretty useful. Something like watering the plants at a friend's house while he/she is out of town is a good example.

Finally, I'd like to be able to assign Priorities without my tasks being reordered based on Priority. iCal for the Mac will order your to-dos first on due date, then priority. I like being able to see what is important to do, but still see what is due first.

Sorry for making this long, but I think you've got a great thing going, and I'm geeked up by it. I've only used it for today so far, but it's just what I'm looking for. Keep up the good work and thanks.

Um, Hi again. I'm reading in the forum that other people have put up at least the color idea of mine above (and maybe others). I just wanted to apologize for being redundant.

If one could associate colors with tags, that could be very powerful.

scottydeep, just wanted to say thanks for your feedback!

Colors (or 'colours', as I should really be saying, being from Australia :) are something that we'll be exploring more -- I think most requests are for coloring lists, but coloring specific tasks or tags could be interesting too.

Having 'until' and 'x times' options for repeating tasks is something that's on our to-do list :) We'll also be looking into sorting options.

Thanks again for your suggestions -- if there's anything else that you think of, please let us know!

I second the bit about repeats that ends.

Coloring specific tasks is the version that would be most useful for me. I use this all the time in my desktop-based to-do list.

It serves a different purpose than tags or priorities. For example, purple tasks are "in someone else's hands," and I can't act on them until the other person finishes his/her part. To do that with tags, I'd need to be able to show all tasks _except_ purple-tagged tasks.

Using tags, wouldn't something like this do the trick for you?

NOT tag:purple

Not as pretty as colored rows, but it might do the trick if I understand you correctly.

Adding something like a star to a task could be neat too.

Or some other small but easily-identifiable icon.
