Add sub tasks as an option that can be turned off- then see how many more people enjoy RTM

(closed account) says:
I admit I loved RTM, but I'm one of those people who did not stick around to post about it in the fourums at All. If RTM did implement subtasks I would have no other reason to look at other web apps that attemp to help me get things done but always fail miserably in the end.

To me the answer is simple add basic sub task ability that is automatically turned off for users, put out a bloog post about it and see how many people truly appreciate it. I belive the response will be positive by many and help start a more serious diolog about how to implement subtasks into RTM without disrupting it's zen like interface we have all come to love.

Also, RTM should ask people who sign up for RTM if they would be willing to fill out a simple little survey describing why they haven't returned back to RTM if there account has fallen into some what of an inactive status after say 6 weeks. This would help RTM developers be more aware of the opinions and ideas they currently are not recieving from those people who stick around.

If you like my idea of creating basic subtask option that starts in the off position add a plus one. And If a lack of sub tasks is keeping you from upgrading to a pro account list that as well- iknow it kept me from upgrading in the past

RTM is by far the best task utility I've found for my needs, but subtasks would help immensely!

I moved to another task app because rtm has no subtask feature. For pure gtd only one form of tagging is not sufficient.

I just recently upgraded our support and bug tracking software, FogBugz to version 7. It now includes "sub tasks", after much resistance from the developers on the community's continued persistence.

SUB TASKS / SUB CASES are is now the BEST PART of the FogBugz software. I now use FogBugz more often, because it is easier and more natural to do so with sub tasks.

I have been a RTM PRO user for 3-4 years now, and I really feel that Sub Tasks are truly THE "Missing Feature"... I know about lists, tags, custom searches, etc...

BOTTOM LINE:
The fact that the SUB TASK feature is missing in RTM keeps me looking elsewhere.

I agree. I like to keep my tasks quite general for speed and transparency, but certain tasks would benefit from being able to have sub-tasks. I don't like entering sub-tasks as main tasks as it's hard to see what main task they belong to

I want them too, really bad.

Google tasks is pretty bad compared to this, please don't make me use them. In fact I so disliked their implementation that I searched and found this. But I really miss sub tasks and may not be able to last without them.

Percent complete would be nice too.

I would also like to add my request for this feature. I am afraid that I can't start using RTM for more than rudimentary lists until a sub-tasks feature is implemented. Until then I will stay with Google Notebook (which also has Drag & Drop functionality!) .

Please add subtasks for your next release.
I have been using RTM for more than a week now. It has been quite useful for me. The more i use it, the more i feel the need for breaking my tasks into sub tasks.

I agree. I'm using another web app to organize my more complicated projects. One self help book suggested breaking down big tasks into small easy-to-complete tasks as a way to avoid procrastination but I need subtasks to do that. :(

+1. I agree that sub-tasks are the one missing feature that I'm constantly feeling the need for - by all means make them optional but please add them to make RTM perfect! This alone feature would definitely justify upgrading to a Pro account.

+1 for this. Sub-tasks is vital. Google tasks has it and if they improve the rest of their system then I will need to think seriously about moving accross

[For context, I'm a CS guy that has run many software projects.]

I think the analogy with FogBugz is instructive---I suspect that they had similar issues relating to a difficult refactoring to add something that the software architecture wasn't designed to support, and/or a philosophical view about the "right" way to track tasks.

If the architecture is the problem then there are now, or will be, other features that the current architecture doesn't support. The bullet will need to be bitten at some point, might as well do it now and create many satisfied users.

Tracking the number of users that opted in would be a powerful measure of the value of the feature to user community.

As for philosophy, let me point to emacs vs. vi, KDE vs. Gnome, Dewalt vs. Bosch, etc. Our tools, whether they are software tools or woodworking tools, are a very personal choice: there is no "right" tool except what the user prefers.

How about having a task generate a smart list? Where the smart list would have tasks and these be considered sub tasks. When clicking on the original task the smart list could come up. I think this could be a way to implement sub tasks with as little changes as possible.

I was a pro user and have let my "pro" status lapse as I have trouble using RTM with my GTD method PRIMARILY because there is no way to do subtasks. I LOVE RTM. Its web based architecture is great for me and my Mac @ home PC@work problem. However it is really annoying that this feature does not exist.

Please consider adding it and send an email to all old and new customers. If I no longer use the product I can see myself returning if this is added.

along with the sub tasks + sub projects, it would be good to have them hideable / showable (maybe in an expandable list) so that it's easy to close all the sub tasks and get a quick overview of the big picture, but then open them up and see the details when you want.

But I cannot use this functionnality.

Is somenone able to use this functionnality ?l

This idea is considered similar to "Subtasks", and all votes have been transferred to that idea.
