Long term tasks appearing earlier

bgross says:
This is my #1 problem with RTM.

Most of my tasks I try to keep short-term, but I have some tasks like "Work on Project X" which I don't want to break down into sub-tasks. I set the due-date of this task to the due-date of the project (a long time from now), but then the task doesn't show up on my "Today" list until the day it's actually due.

It would be nice if there were some mechanism to specify how soon before the task is due to appear on the "Today" list. It could default to "same day," but would also allow you to specify something longer.

For example, for a project that's due in a month you could specify the "lead time" to be 2 weeks. Two weeks before the project is due, it will start appearing in your today list, every day.

The program "Life Balance" uses this method (called "lead time"), and I found it pretty useful. It would be great if you guys could also implement it.

There are numerous threads here covering this idea - most use the term start date.

One workaround is to use a smartlist that simply looks at everything you want out to, for example, a week.

Another more involved approach is to use a tag system to smother things on a per-tag basis - very clever. More here (at the end): http://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/tips/590/

That's what I'm using now, but it feels like a work-around. Having a task span be able to span across multiple days seems like a better solution to me (or at least, to allow that as a possibility).

The spanning suggestion has come up here before, and is (in my opinion) the most elegant approach to this issue.

There's been no comment on this issue from the RTM crew in a long time, and I will be pleasantly surprised if and when they make an effort to address this usability issue.

This idea is considered similar to "Start dates", and all votes have been transferred to that idea.
