Color-Coded Tabs (i.e. LISTS)

Hi,
After searching at least 12 applications over 72 hours, RTM is by far the simplest. Thanks for the great product! Changed my whole planning/workflow.
** ONE Immediate Improvement >> COLOR coded Tabs **
I think Color-Coded TABS (i.e. Lists) would be a cool thing to create to create a visual "hierarchy" of Lists. I intend to use colors to separate near-term projects and Long-term projects (i.e. 40,000ft vs 30,000ft, or Annual vs Quarterly review). Currently being used for "Personal" & "Professional" (immediate) projects lists. GTD is strictly context "tags", and
I would like to grey out "future" projects with a secondary color...like grey. (my minddumps tend to generate whole future projects :)
For now, I'm limiting the number of Tabs to avoid category 'sprawl', short-term memory overload .. also a good UI (user interface) principle. So, I've resorted to using an external app (i.e. mindmapping software) for 40,000ft and 50,000ft perspectives.
My 2 cents.
Thanks for the great app!
Cheers,
Neil Mori

Requests for more (better) color in the RTM UI date to the earliest days (e.g., http://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/help/362/).
Clearly, RTM has a very set idea of the sort of clean interface they will present to the world, and in many ways I admire that. It's simplicity has always been one of its big draws for me over the last few years.
Having said that, I think there are attractive ways where the judicious use of more color would be helpful to the user as a way to cue their attention and organize what they are looking at.
Some useful past suggestions have included the desire to associate colors with lists, with items on lists, with tags, with the tabs on top, with recurrence, or some combination (http://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/ideas/868/, http://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/ideas/1949/). There have been requests for alternating, ledger-style coloring (http://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/ideas/864/), too.
My personal, pet color idea has always been along the lines of having a smartlist's tab color vary depending on criteria you configure. For example, a bill list might be white until something is a week out, then orange, then turn red if anything on it is due or over due (http://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/ideas/2838/, http://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/ideas/2681/). Subsequent posters have also suggested having tabs that simply vanish until their criteria are met, and then they would reappear. This would help those of us with so many smartlists that RTM looks cluttered.
A lot of dedicated RTM users have now spent years suggesting a lot of useful ways to incorporate color into the site; it would be exciting to see some of this come to pass.

Check out the RTM Google Desktop Gadget located at www.catsoft.ch/gg/catsoftrtm.gg or add it through the desktop sidebar with Add Gadget, search for RTM. This includes colored lists. You can find a small screencast at http://screencast.com/t/22ldr2l5D1F.
