Simple Addition to Search to implement "next action"

justin.constant says:
I was wondering if you could add a search term that returned the 1st item in a list. Since the sorting is saved for each list, you could have something simple like:

whatIsFirst:"list"
Would return the first item on the list based on the current view.
Or maybe...

whatIsFirst:("list","sorting method"). That way you could set the determining factor.

Also, another possiblity would be to allow special terms such as allLists and allSmartLists.

whatIsFirst:allSmartLists AND NOT list:unworthy

would return the first item on every smartlist and then people could selectively leave out certain lists.

Just an idea

That's a neat idea. If it came along with more custom control over sorting, it would be a killer feature!

Anything that adds weight to the goal of customized multi-criteria per-list sorting is fine by me.

Great idea.
We were discussing something like this here:

trying to figure out what the pitfalls and advantages of a search similar to this would be.

+1

A ‘Next action’ function, something that gives me the possibility to arrange tasks in time-order or set up dependencies, for me would fill the missing link for my ‘Getting Things Done’ principle setup in RTM. Then I can order my 'Someday' list for example..

But I’ll understand it’s a difficult feature, witch might be hard to implement.

This idea is considered similar to "Ability to limit search results (e.g. only show first 5 tasks)", and all votes have been transferred to that idea.
