Add Group By to Smart Lists

(closed account) says:
It would be great to be able to create a smart list that displays items from many lists and then to group by the list (or perhaps other fields) that tasks are a part of (similar to the way the igoogle gadget groups by due date. That would make a much more useful "at a glance" view of a large number of tasks

One way of looking at this suggestion is to think of the never ending sub-tasks line of discussion. I will try to avoid that.

The other way to look at this is as a sorting suggestion. We've looked at the many different ways sorting would be helpful, especially multi-criteria custom sorts, but I don't think anyone has ever suggested grouping as part of one of those sorts.

I like the idea.

Yes, coming from doing a lot of reporting recently (MS SSRS), grouping definitely has it's uses, particularly in organizing data in such a way that makes it visually easier to understand, especially when dealing with larger lists. But grouping is a bit harder to program than simple sorts, even mult-criteria ones, so I figure this is a secondary enhancement after custom sorting (hopefully) gets implemented...

My primary thought in suggesting this was for when using the iGoogle gadget. That gadget already does a sorted group by due date. That is a great view if you are looking at a single list at a time. When looking at "All Lists" or a Smart List though, it would be helpful to have the items grouped by the list that they are a part of rather than the due date. (the due date could still be shown in the left margin as it already is with overdue tasks). I think that this would be a fairly simple option to add to the iGoogle gadget code because of the way that it is already structured. I may take a shot at doing the modification myself with a local copy of the gadget. As far as making the same change in the primary rtm interface, it would probably be at least a little more complex as the front end code does not currently do any grouping at all and so you would be starting from scratch.

I'm going to massively SECOND the grouping suggestion.

I was really surprised that there's no grouping option already in RTM.

With even a moderately large list of tasks, a visual divider that groups those tasks is a major usability boost.

The way the iGoogle plugin sorts tasks is a perfect example. I find myself being able to get a much better idea at-a-glance of what needs to be done with iGoogle that the native RTM listing.

I'm also a MilkSync user (love it!) and when combined with PocketBreeze I get the same grouping effect as in iGoogle.

I would deffinitely (did i mention deffinitely?) LOVE to see a "group by..." feature in RTM.

I need the grouping badly in a google gadget. For example, I would love to be able to group my tasks by client. Would make it so much more manageable and useful.

ditto. it would make gtd super-duper fantastic to group by lists or tags. it's the one feature we're missing.

new user here - love it. will be going pro assp

I totally agree of the grouping feature.. I think at least each task should have the list name displayed in the smart list result.

It's interesting that if you use RTM in mobile phone, you actually can see the list name associated with each task, but you don't see that in the full functional web view. Am I missing something here??

This idea is considered similar to "Group by list name", and all votes have been transferred to that idea.
