Manual ordering of list tabs

lwallach says:
Searching back, I only found one instance of this suggestion quite a while ago with no responses, and now can't reply to it.

(speaking of which I think it's really odd that we can't reply to threads that haven't been active in a while - this is the only discussion forum I've ever seen this restriction in place!)

Anyway, I think it would be really useful to be able to have our own ordering of the list tabs. This way, functionally similar tabs could be grouped, or you could simply order things in the way that made sense to your workflow. The current system seemst to be all hard lists in alphabetical order followed by all smartlists in alphabetical order. Unless I'm missing something that is...

I suggested that this could be done by increasing the number of priorities to nine, with zero to clear.

Hmmm, Paul, I don't think I understand what you are saying. I'm not talking about priorities or tasks WITHIN a list. I'm talking about the tabs you see that represent your various lists like inbox, personal, sent, smarlist A, smartlist B, etc. The order that those tabs are in is currently not changeable. You always see the hard lists in alphabetical order, then the smarlists in alphabetical order from left to right. For example, mine are from left to right: inbox, processed, sent, check, lone, next actions, projects & goals, someday, stale, tickler, waiting. inbox, processed and sent are my hard lists, and the remaining are my smartlists.

Or am I just not understanding your point?

No, I totally missed the fact that you were talking about tabs, not tasks. Lets call it a blonde moment!

I second this, being able to change the order that the tabs appear in would be helpful. I guess the only way to do it currently is to prefix each list name with 01, 02, 03 etc..

That's a good point, jwillsfleming, but that still will only order within each type (hard list or smartlist). You still wouldn't be able to order it so that you'd have a hardlist tab, then an smartlist tab, then another hardlist tab, etc...

I'll toss my name in the hat. I'd love to be able to order my lists.

One workaround for this is to prefix list names that you want to group together with the same non-alphabetical character. For example, I have these lists: +actions, +projects, +tickler, +waiting, -shopping, -someday. I do the same thing with tags, to put those into related groups as well. E.g., .call, .errand, .learn, @bank, @costco, @homestore

Oops, you're right ,though, above workaround won't fix problem of hardlists and smartlists being in separate groups.

One way would be to completely rely on smart list and hide the regular lists altogether by using Stylish (sorry, only for Firefox) found at http://userstyles.org/styles/4802.

Example including other nice tweaks made possible by Stylish:
