Pick up due dates when typed inline in task name
cbj1329 says:
I think it would be nice if I could enter task names like:
"Call bob tomorrow" or
"Process invoice for client next wednesday"
and it would automatically pick up "tomorrow" or "next wednesday" as the due date.
I suppose this would occasionally yield an incorrect due date, but you could always correct it manually.
RTM is wonderful, btw. I have tried many task managers (for computers, for phones, etc), but I never stuck with them. It was always easier to use a notebook and I would revert to that. I have been using RTM for about 3 months, and I rely on it now without even thinking. RTM is the first one I found that has the right mix of simplicity and functionality. Great job!

This is built in already when you submit through like twitter or your phone. I haven't tried it from the main interface.

I agree that adding dates inline when adding a task name would be helpful, or something that is more sequential than the current system.
it seems strange that you don't immediately go to the date field after entering a task name. these are the two critical pieces of information for a task. you shouldn't need to work to get to the date field.

That or the long awaited command box online in the webservice, instead of only through twitter and similars.

Oohh, this idea thread is exactly what I was starting to wish for!! Imagine if adding tasks could be as simple as searching for tasks!!!
e.g.
meet with professor to talk about his article due:today tag:+research l o c atio n :@campus list:!I_gotta
No further clicking required! ;)
Oh but I wouldn't want to lose the functio n ality of the "Add Task" the way it works now ... i.e. it adds to the current list or Smart List (except, of course, if the smart list is defined by A OR B OR C, it doesn't choose o n e for you). Perhaps this butto n could be renamed to "Add to List"?

Did you check this out? Maybe someone has an idea how to make it work in IE, the javascript seems too long. It works well in Firefox and captures selected text as task name (editable) and URL from page it was called. Location and list can be entered in the dialogue box if you end the input with a trailing " " (space).

As I should have pointed out earlier, thanks to wcitypoe for starting this idea.

just want to add a vote for this - I'd love to be able to enter all the information I want in one fell swoop without having to click, click, click or use multiple keyboard shortcuts (exactly as per hbeale's suggestion).

please add my vote too, mouse clicking is so...... yesterday.

This would be especially nice if you've a lot of tasks because once you create a new task and hit return, it immediately drops out of view to the bottom of the screen (b/c there's no due date). Yes, it stays selected so all you have to do is hit "d" to enter a date (bringing it back into view), but this behavior is pretty disorienting, esp. since it does work this way when you add a task through twitter.

After using Google Calendar and RTM GMail addon, it becomes a pain in the neck when typing the due date in the task name in the main interface yields nothing but a weird-looking task.

I recently switched from Todoist to RTM--and RTM rocks! But Todoist did have a nice feature something like what folks are talking about here. If you type in, for example:
order the new annie dillard book www.amazon.com @shop
...then Todoist automatically made www.amazon.com into a hyperlink and automatically made @shop into a "shop" label. That's the only think I really miss from Todoist (but there's plenty at RTM to make up for it, e.g., Todoist wouldn't let you change whole groups of tasks from one list to another or from one label to another).
Thanks for RTM!

this is exactly what i'm hoping for!!
Pardon what must seem repetitive, but when I see the same good ideas surfacing over and over, I am compelled to note the fact.
The idea of parsing the text in the data entry field has been around since RTM was wet behind the ears, and I have watched the idea resurface over and over.
