Reorder lists

rrraven says:
That'd be great if one could reorder lists by moving them up or down in settings

Yes, I agree with you, I think that it's a desirable feature, and that it would add a high flexibility to RTM.

An alternative to that (as usually happens in other cases like this one) is to rename your lists, so that you put a number before each list name, meaning the order.

I mean, if you want the lists "Work" and "Home" to be put in that order, you can rename them "1 - Work" and "2 - Home", respectively. That should work.

But that's not nice, and it's tedious when you want to insert a new list between to existing lists.

Not RTM specific, but a more general suggestion... whenever I order items via numbers like you suggest, I use 10, 20, 30, etc. to permit later entries to be added without the tedious renaming to which you refer.

Have a look at how TaDa lists does this, its really cool. It allows drap and drop sorting which feels very natural, prefixing with numbers feels like the sort of old bodge we used to have to do :)

I add my vote too.

This is the only reason for still using todoist!

I'll second this idea.

I just started with RTM and it is the first feature I have found lacking.

GTDTracks also handles this fairly nicely.

I also find this sorely lacking. Just starting using RTM and I am alarmed to see that this has been an issue for over a year. What's going on???

+1 for drag/drop sorting, and for renaming list from task view, without going to configure.

Actually, I think most if not all of the functionality in Configuration/Lists could be directly in the Tasks view.

Yes.

I just posted to another thread asking the same thing. Someone right above my post said they were going to start a new thread addressing something about this issue but I can't find their thread. Any clues?

If it's not too much work, I would love this. I have already been using various schemes (like numbering, or grouping using a ^ symbol to begin with, etc.) to force ordering for myself. That's not too bad for short lists but for longer ones it's time consuming.

Hi guys totally agree with you. Most apps you see now on the web allow the reorder facility with drag and drop. Cannot believe the team have not rolled this out. Its an obvious upgrade that required but perhaps we need to email them separately

Another vote for this. Question: I'm new here; do the RTM folks address these issues in their replies? I don't see any official responses to this thread... Thanks!

Hundreds of hours? This should be a few hour job for one person, if they simply added a listbox in the settings or something (drag-and-drop would probably take a bit longer, without a library)..
It is free, though, so who am I to complain... They should make it open-source, I would gladly add this feature :)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I know that re-ordering lists is a popular request and it's been added to the feature request list in the past. If I have any news about possible implementation I will let you know.

I agree! This would be awesome! If drag and drop is too hard, then simply having up and down icons to move each list up and down would be useful.

"Actually, I think most if not all of the functionality in Configuration/Lists could be directly in the Tasks view."
Ehh, possibly. The main thing that annoys me is not adding, deleting, and renaming lists without going to the settings.

I'd also like to add that would be nice for us to arrange the RTM layout like putting the lists on a column on the left side of the screen and being able to set sublists (even if only in a representative way)

I would be happy if it had an inbox approach with the list links/buttons arranged vertically along the left side

From the GTD book (Getting Things Done): Mini-projects that requires a number of (for example 10) tasks done in a specific order.

I'll add that this idea from above --

"I mean, if you want the lists "Work" and "Home" to be put in that order, you can rename them "1 - Work" and "2 - Home", respectively. That should work. "

-- isn't bad, but I tried it and it makes things look too sloppy on the Android App.

This idea is considered similar to "Drag and drop to reorder tasks", and all votes have been transferred to that idea.
