Unfortunately, Remember The Milk doesn't currently support shifting between timezones automatically. When a due date is set in one timezone, the task will be due at the start of that day (midnight) in that timezone. So a timezone change can sometimes cause dates to appear to shift.

To fix your tasks, I'd suggest trying the following in the web or desktop app:

1. Click on the Settings gear at the top right.
2. Click on Account settings.
3. Find the Timezone option and check what it's set to.
4. If it's already set to your home timezone, try changing it to the timezone you were in when the shift happened, then click Save changes.
5. Then change it back to your home timezone and save again. This should reset your tasks and may help get them back on the correct day.

If any tasks are still off afterward, you can search for tasks by updated date (for example, updatedAfter:2026-03-08) to find the ones that were affected during the DST change, and then update them manually.

Your Android app should sync and reflect the corrected dates once they're fixed in the web or desktop app.

<issued>2026-04-04T19:19:49Z</issued><modified>2026-04-04T19:19:49Z</modified><created>2026-04-04T19:19:49Z</created>

Reply to Desktop app icons

emily (Remember The Milk) says:

Hi jpkeates,

I'm sorry to hear the icons aren't showing for you in the desktop app. Could you contact us so we can look into what's happening?

In the meantime, you should be able to print your list by logging in to the web app (but let us know if there are any issues there, too!).

<issued>2026-04-01T19:09:58Z</issued><modified>2026-04-01T19:09:58Z</modified><created>2026-04-01T19:09:58Z</created>

Date changes with switch to DAYLIGHT SAVINGS time

susanatdotcom says:

I recently was in a different time zone when DST went into effect. when that happened, all of my tasks changed DATES. the times of the tasks were the same but on a different date. I KNOW I'm not the only one. This thread has a negative vibe with strong voices in opposition and someone needs to be "high in disagreeableness" to contradict the vibe, so here I am.

Let me say this, after, yes, silence, Emily has now replied in this thread 5 TIMES! That is more than enough for me to conclude that this app will be here for 10 more years.

My subscription comes up in 7 days. I will renew with delight and confidence!

Let me also say this: I do not need new features. Definitely not AI. In my experience, AI is only right 80% of the time. I don't need AI injecting 20% errors into my todo list structure. I am not against new features, but stability and reliability and longevity are MUCH more important to me.

Credit to Emily's genius (I do mean that) 20 years ago for dialing into just the right set of features and UI and implementation that has stood the test of time! It's quite remarkable.

(One of my pet peeves was not being able to turn off "Stay logged in" with the keyboard. Surprising for one of the most keyboard-friendly apps in existence. But while not ideal there are always workarounds. I found one: This input to Stylebot:
#remember {
display: initial;
height: 1px;
width: 1px;
}
in case that helps anyone else.)

As for lock in, I am very sympathetic to @bennybee's experience. I have no doubt it was a challenge. But on the face of it, from a technical point of view, the ical fIles have all your items, and the .json files have even more in the appropriate types and structure. I have read my .json files and while converting to a format for some other tool might be a challenge, the info is really all in there. I do not feel locked in AT ALL!

And one last thing, over the last 20 years I have been impressed with the service reliability. Except for the recent Halloween scare, the service like never goes down. And the explanation for that seemed entirely reasonable--a set of factors that all had to line up to make that happen. That's always possible with everything. And here we are, 4 months later, and rock solid stability.

To Emily and my favorite small team of techies who have no idea about PR, marketing or how to run a business, THANK YOU! Keep ignoring the PR and marketing and keep the site working as you have been doing so successfully for so long!

<issued>2026-02-14T21:52:57Z</issued><modified>2026-02-14T21:52:57Z</modified><created>2026-02-14T21:52:57Z</created>

Reply to Undeleting a task from Trash

emily (Remember The Milk) says:

Hi brianluff,

The Trash feature is available to all users.

When you delete a task (in any of our apps), it gets moved to the Trash rather than being permanently removed. We're sorry that moving your data to another app was so frustrating. We appreciate your feedback on this.

You always own your own data, and there are two export options.

- JSON export (the full export) which you can archive, import back into Remember The Milk, use in another service, or convert into CSV or other formats using a tool or AI
- iCalendar export which is more limited but works with calendar apps

A bit of context on why we use JSON: task data has a lot of structure (lists, tags, notes, subtasks, recurrence rules) that something like CSV would lose or flatten. JSON is an open, widely-used data standard that keeps all of that intact and can be read by pretty much any programming language or tool. There's unfortunately no universal task management data standard, so there's always a conversion step when moving between apps.

If anyone runs into trouble with exporting, feel free to get in touch and we'll do our best to help.

<issued>2026-02-01T19:35:17Z</issued><modified>2026-02-01T19:35:17Z</modified><created>2026-02-01T19:35:17Z</created>

Reply to Development drought

bennybee (Pro) says:

LEAVING RTM & WHY & HOW MUCH A PAIN
I have used RTM for years. Love the clean interface, simple format, very customizable. I have used previously about 6 or more other task managers including Toodledo (abandonware) and Clickup (that wants to be all things, has menus all over the place, and really good marketing), but settled on RTM for its simple interface and custom lists. Unfortunatly I now require a few more features: quick time calendar updates and a little more complex project management. I don't expect RTM to change, so have no hard feelings. It has served its purpose. The data migration though has been a bear! I tried the outdated script (forgetthemilk?) and it completely botched the export (I have a fairly large complex collection of lists). Finally, I used AI to help design a script to interpret the very proprietary JSON file into csv files that can be read by other programs. I may have spent up to a dozen hours using AI and doing many scripts to get my data! As I did this I realized the business model of 'holding data hostage'. If it is too much of a pain to transfer data people give up and think it just isn't worth it, besides RTM isn't so bad. Data hostage Stockholm syndrome. This lack of portability made me even more determined to escape, if for no other reason than to own my data. I think it was worth it and will be even more vigilant to avoid companies with similar practices. The AI used by me was Gemini, and it made many unsuccessful attempts until it got it right. Now though, I will be free. First thing with new software is to check the export options. Still, it probably is a good business model to lock in customers along with automatic billing. For every one that leaves how many remain? Good luck!

<issued>2026-02-01T07:08:13Z</issued><modified>2026-02-01T07:08:13Z</modified><created>2026-02-01T07:08:13Z</created>

Reply to Subtasks / Parent task

emily (Remember The Milk) says:

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately Smart Lists can't look at a subtask's parent, so I don't think this is possible directly.

As a bit of a workaround, you could use MilkScript.

The general idea is to run a MilkScript that:

- finds all subtasks tagged na
- checks whether their parent task is tagged tools
- adds a helper tag such as na-parent-tools to those subtasks

You then create a normal Smart List that simply shows:

tag:na-parent-tools

The list updates whenever you rerun the script, so it's not automatic. It's adding tags so it might make things look a little messy, but this is the best idea I can come up with. :) Hopefully someone else might have a smarter solution!

Note: If you're not comfortable writing MilkScript yourself, you can also use ChatGPT (or similar) to generate it. You can describe the logic in plain English, and then paste the resulting script into MilkScript. :)

<issued>2026-01-31T18:41:54Z</issued><modified>2026-01-31T18:41:54Z</modified><created>2026-01-31T18:41:54Z</created>

Reply to Display screen

emily (Remember The Milk) says:

Hi farrowlj,

Sorry to hear about that! It sounds like the app may have entered full screen mode.

Are you using Remember The Milk in a web browser, or are you using the desktop app? Here are some things to try:

- If you're using a web browser: Press F11 (or Ctrl+Cmd+F on a Mac) to exit full screen mode.

- If you're using the desktop app on Mac: Move your mouse to the top of the screen and click the green button in the top-left corner, or press Ctrl+Cmd+F.

- If you're using the desktop app on Windows: Press F11 to toggle full screen off.

Let us know if that does the trick!
