I use a wide variety of lists, tags, recurring reminders, email'd tasks, etc to organize my todos, resulting in a sometimes (often!) overwhelming number of tasks. To "cull the herd" I use the following search to find the most important items:

(dueBefore:today OR dueWithin:"5 days of today" OR priority:1 OR priority:2 OR priority:3 OR list:Hot) and status:incomplete

This includes all incomplete items that are:
* past-due (note that dueWithin does not include past-due!)
* due within 5 days
* has a priority
* in my "Hot" list (useful for emailed tasks)

Named "Alpha" since the list tabs sort alphabetically.
