Feature Request: Better Searching

The new "Smart Add" feature has really improved RTM on the iPhone. The next feature I would really like to use is a "Smart Search" button. As my lists and inbox get larger, I would like a quick way to filter or sort items. There are many ways that this can be implemented.

Going to another screen to search is not very practical and it doesn't have "live" updating. Something similar to the contacts search feature would be ideal. Maybe scrolling to the top of the screen would expose a search box.

Aside from restarting the iPhone, you may also want to go into the app's Settings and deactivate the badge icon, sync, exit, and go back and turn it on again.

I have noticed that the badge incorrectly shows an incorrect count of Tasks that are due today.

This is a common and annoying occurance for me.

For instance this morning i woke up, looked at my iphone, and the badge indicates i have 57(!) tasks due today. I open up the RTM app, sync, and its now 15 (correct number) of tasks due today. This will happen every so often throughout the day, the badge number will jump back up for no apparent reason.

I have tried the following:

Turned notifications off. Synced RTM on the iphone, turned notifications back on, synced RTM, and no change.

Anyone else experience this?

Am I reading this right? If I upgrade a free account to a Pro account and then don't renew as a Pro account at the end of the term, everything gets deleted? (it doesn't revert back to a free account?)

Would appreciate your assistance in clearing this up.

In the last couple of weeks, I observe the following:

- I change something on the IPhone, sync process starts. Both the network traffic icon and RTM icon spin, network traffic icon stops, RTM icon keeps spinning indefinitely. I quit the app after a (long) while.
- I re-start RTM.
- RTM either takes a loooong time to start or quits back to the home screen (I then restart and RTM opens)
- In either case, any changes are lost.

It appears that the sync process is not as reliable as it used to be...

I too love the Smart Add and would second the comments on getting to the # and the loss of predictive text.

However, I also am finding that if I click slightly above the keyboard by mistake the keyboard disappears but also the content of the Smart Add field also disappears. Maybe it is just me but I find myself doing this on a regular basis (fat fingers?). Would be great if the text remained in the box until you have hit Done even if you go away and come back again.

I like the new Smart Add but the loss of the predictive keyboard makes it almost not worth using. One of the strengths of the iPhone is the fact it has a soft keyboard so it is flexible but the only reason it works so well is because of the predictive functions to help keep you moving along.

Can we get this fixed soon? And also if the keyboard API's allow it why not have the predictive keyboard dictionary also include the 'tags' 'smartlists' 'locations', etc from inside RTM while you're in the Smart Add field. (If that isn't possible with the current SDK maybe you could reqeust it from apple for inclusion as an API in 4.0 for next year.)

Losing new items / app hanging

For me when i complete tasks on the web, the iphone badge will update in about 4 seconds with the remaining tasks pending.

For the this to work for you, however you need a PRO account.

You just need to set the option (whether to show the number of incomplete tasks or tasks due today) in the app's Settings.

It sounds like, in both cases, you're dealing with push notifications.

With the popup, that's a push notification telling you the tasks you have due either at a particular time or for the day. (You can check your settings on the website, in the Settings on the Reminders tab.)

The badge icon is updated via another push notification.

In both cases, these notifications can only be received if you have an active Wi-Fi connection. Since you do not, the notifications will be queued by Apple to be sent when your iPod is "available". If you're persistently active on a network, you would find that these notifications keep your RTM experience current without having to open the app, but as your situation currently is, I'm not sure there's much remedy to this.

... in the morning, I sync (just in case) - then turn off wifi for the day to save batteries (ipod touch) - and I have no wifi during the day anyway

I do tasks. When I come home, I turn wifi back on.

It syncs. It tells pops up a window telling me I have N tasks to do. No I don't, I did them!

I think it's getting the tasks for the day, generating the report and THEN crosschecking against tasks I've marked as done. It should do the crosscheck before giving me the report.

Also, in the evening the number of tasks to do for the day on the icon is wrong, unless I open the app and close it again.

It's not a dealbreaker, i.e. information isn't lost, but it's rather annoying!

Suggestion for easier due date edit

Yet, editing due dates is IMO too time consuming.
Now it's: 1) clicking on the task, 2) clicking on edit button, 3) clicking on "date". That's 2 clicks too many!

I would strongly suggest a solution I saw implemented in "Pocket Finance" app. Namely, why not enable entering the "edit date" mode by simply clicking on the right side of the task field in the task window? Clicking anywhere else (middle, left side) would still open the edit window whereas clucking on the right side (where the date of the task is given) would bring us two steps forward.

Dear fellow RTM users, do you agree with that? That'd be a very helpful feature for me and I hope for you as well :)

Feature request - click to show the tasks related to the same tag

The following feature, though works in the Safari Web App, doesn't work in the iPhone App: when viewing details of a task, clicking an a tag would show the list of tasks associated to the same tag.

This is very useful especially when grouping tasks by projects... I usually do the following:
- I create a task that would be the project title (Ex: "Decorate my room").
- I tag the task with a "-" to mark it as a project title and another tag describing the project (Ex: "decorate_room").
- I add the tasks of the project and tag them with the same tag describing the project ("decorate_room").
- I create a smart list that shows only the tasks that I marked as project titles (tag="-").
- When I want to see the tasks related to a specific project, I click on the smart list to show the list of projects, then I click on the project title ("Decorate my room") and then on the tag related to the project ("decorate_room").

I want to do the same on the iPhone App!

If that doesn't help, it would be worthwhile to try removing the RTM app (once synchronized) and reinstalling it through the App Store?

Sync not consistently working

I've been having the same problem for the past few months. I have an iPhone 3GS with 3.01 and the latest RTM app. The issue is the sync does not work consistently. For example, i will mark a task completed on the iPhone, and it won't update to the server, even after clicking the sync button multiple times (and seeing the network traffic icon on my iPhone show data transfer). The issue happens if I create a task on the iPhone as well. Eventually the items will sync up (usually after closing and opening the app a few times).

Although I agree that typing in all of the Smart Add syntax on the iPhone can be a headache, the one thing that I *do* like about this feature is that it makes it *very* easy to do quick task entry if you're simply following the "collect-now-process-later" philosophy of task management.

I generally jot down tasks on-the-go as soon as I think of them, and generally the whole process of deciding how to organize or catalog a task when my mind is on something else is a headache anyway. The new "Smart Add" entry field, even without the "smart" features, is a great step in the right direction for enabling quick task entry, even directly to the inbox.

In fact, I *like* the fact that the Inbox is where things land for that specific reason -- I just want to get my tasks entered and worry about processing them later. I realize that this is counterintuitive to how RTM has traditionally worked, and not what many of you would expect, but it would be nice to see an option for "plain" tasks entered in the Smart Add field to *always* go to the Inbox, regardless of what list you're presently looking at. If I want to add a task to a specific list, I can always do it using the old method.

* Whether the tag is in use in a task when deleted?
* The tag name itself that is not deleting?

Perhaps it's something more specific that causes it not to be deleted.

I completely agree with the comments above concerning the smart add. On the website the point of the smart add is to simplify adding tasks. Online this is a great success. On the iphone it doesn't really add any easy of access over the normal method of adding. Actually, come to think of it, the normal method of adding is easier since you don't necessarily have to type in the whole list/tag etc.

I'd like to second what manning999 is saying, it seems the Smart Add feature isn't quite as functional as it would originally seem to be.

The process of going through the keyboard menus to get to the '#' symbol or similar is unnecessarily delicate (and cumbersome - eg having to type in a whole tag). Tapping a nice and large text field then tapping the tag from a list is a lot more consistent and reliable when dealing with a relatively small screen as the iPhone's.

In a browser window on a lap/desktop, completely different story - Smart Add is great. Unfortunately, I don't think it is simply muscle memory holding me back this time around.

The only thing I could see the bar useful for is for times when I need to really quickly jot down a couple of things without thinking about it. Is there a way of turning off the Smart Add bar to get that little bit of the iPhone screen back?

Smart Add on the iPhone is cute, and is more consistent with the web site. But, I agree w/ tonysteiner that entering properties on the iPhone requires more key taps than necessary, with some of the special characters requiring 2 taps just to get to them, and going back and forth between special characters and the alphabet. I don't know if the SDK offers the kind of custom keyboard that would mimic the autocomplete feature on the web site, because that would make Smart Add on the iPhone far more useful. As of now, I think the standard way of entering a task on the iPhone is actually faster and more reliable.

If I really want to use Smart Add on the iPhone, I guess I could speed up task adding by create a note that has a lot of my common property combinations. Then, copy and paste into the Smart Add box.

Smart Add would be quite useful in the iGoogle and Gmail gadgets.

Tags should be deleted from the iPhone app automatically. But you may want to go to Tags, tap Edit, select the tag, and tap the Delete button to delete it from the iPhone. That will delete it on the iPhone first, which should then sync back to the website (so you could delete it there and sync back for other tags).

I like Smart Add on the regular RTM site, but on the iPhone I don't feel it's working. For example the # and ^ tokens are hidden too far away in the keyboard (123 -> #+=). And there's no suggestion as you type. Once you start typing in the smart add field, there's plenty of room beneath for suggestions or buttons to add tags, lists, priorities etc.

Also, is it possible to give the Tags screen an index on the right (like contacts for example)? This would speed up finding the right label.

I have been loving the RTM app on my iphone, until recently I realised that some new listed I have created using my iphone was not showing up on my laptop when I access through the desktop shortcut.
The lists are all on the internet if I access through Safari.

Is it a sync problem?
Looks like my iphone and the website are in sync, only my desktop is not working.

Also, how do I change the name of a list I have already created? and how do I remove a list if it is no longer active?

You can reset the application (and log in with a different account) by going to More | Settings | Reset | Erase All Content and Settings.

The next time you start the app, you can log in with your correct account.

Here are the current steps for adding a task:
- press +, then wait for animation to complete
- click Task Name, then wait for transition
- enter task name
- click save, then wait for transition
- click done, then wait for transition

This could be shortened to:
- press +, then be presented with task name entry
- click "done"

With alternate flow for regular add:
- press +, then be presented with task name entry
- click "save"
- choose other fields and enter data
- click "done"

The other trick is to avoid the multiple-tap process of getting to the "Complete" button. Instead you can do a small swipe on the right side of an item in a task list, which brings up a little "Complete" button to tap.

Viewing tasks on google calendar from iPhone

I have flirted with RTM for over two years. Sometimes using it exclusively, other times in conjunction with other apps.

After having used Omnifocus, Things, ToDo, Toodledo in depth, I am only using RTM.

I will not get into a description of the other apps, Let me just say that I am fed up with syncs gone wrong, endless backups, features you don't even use, endless discussions about GTD and David Allen's interpretation of the world, WebDav servers, etc,etc,etc. I'll just use one example:

My experience in organizers dates back to Day-Timer, Franklin Covey, Palm. I am an organization and tasks freak. My experience is ample and the number of projects I handle is rather large. RTM helps me put everything under control.

My opinion could go unnoticed as one more praising an excellent product. Bear in mind, however, that I posted some aggressive comments months ago. Now, after spending a lot of money on other apps, after having used them for months, I am back to stay.

It sounds like you've subscribed to the RTM Google Calendar (which is intended to load a task "pane" within Google Calendar), whereas for syncing tasks-as-events with the iPhone, you'd want to subscribe to the iCalendar in Google Calendar.

In general, I find that aiming slightly "above" something on the iPhone/iPod Touch works pretty effectively. Even with my pretty big fingers I generally don't have any problems.

Also, I've noticed that people with long nails (who tend to flatten their fingers when tapping) have a hard time tapping accurately. I don't really have any suggestions there, unfortunately. :-/

So how about having similar functionality on the iPhone. I find the existing app too heavy for just adding that task or thought. I'm looking for something on the lighter side for simple add a task and get out kind of scenario. I do use the send task via email a lot for just this scenario and it's great that the new shortcut codes work there as well. If only I could get a shortcut icon for email to specific user. I'd be set for life.

My only other gripe about the iPhone app is that if you do want to change a task you have to go several steps deep into task edit. What about bringing up more options on the swipe, other than just COMPLETE. How about adding a POSTPONE button there or better still, an entry box where we can add the new shortcuts. For me that would make the iPhone add as good as the web.

First of all, even though you haven't changed anything, it would be worthwhile to check in your iPhone's Settings, under Notifications, to make sure all notifications are enabled for RTM.

Also, you'll want to look in your Settings on the website, on the Reminders tab, to see if your iPhone is listed there and is enabled. If it already is, try disabling it, waiting for the confirmation at the top to show that reminders are turned off, and then enable it again.

Last, the FAQ has some other information about push notifications too; that may be good to check over if everything else seems in order.

Could you try removing and reinstalling the app? That will reset it and will see if there was a temporary problem with the app.

I am using RTM version 1.1.1, and only recently bothered setting up push notifications for my tasks. However, I'm not getting sound or vibration for push reminders (the alert sound is set to cowbell), even though push notifications otherwise work and are enabled in my iPhone settings.

Can't bulk edit completed tasks

When looking at active tasks, there is an Edit button that lets you bulk edit the list to mark several items as complete. Very useful!

Unfortunately, this feature is missing when looking at completed tasks. I expected to be able to bulk Uncomplete them. In fact, you can't even Uncomplete them one by one using the slide motion.

The reason this is so important is that I'm using a grocery list where items frequently move back and forth between Active and Complete as I realize I need them and later buy them.

Can this feature be added for completeness? Does anyone have a workaround?

I created a task on my phone and I never synced it (i have it set to manual). The task went overdue and it was then that I first tried to sync. The overdue task never showed up on the web. I then added a tag to the task on the phone and sync'd and it worked.

One workaround is:
- Go to the note, select all and Copy
- Delete the note
- Create a new note and Paste what you copied

If you go into a list then choose edit mode on iPhone. Then choose the "lists" button. The application will crash and send you back to springboard.

Doesn't seem too terribly hard to reproduce. Sorry if this has already been posted.

I am using the new Palm Pre and *temporarily* running the iphone web app until the native Pre application is finished (hint... hint).

Are there any plans to update the iPhone web app (i.rememberthemilk.com) to use the smart add feature? I'd love to have that on my phone. It'd be so convenient!

Unfortunately it's not possible to send a task in the iPhone app. You can share tasks (through shared lists) and receive tasks, or send them through the website, but you probably already realize that.
