Overview Layout

I think it would be more functional to remove the tabs on the Overview page. Instead, all the tasks should be listed on the page so they can be viewed all at once. The tasks should still be grouped by Today, Tomorrow and Overdue.

This eliminates the need to click through Today, Tomorrow, and Overdue. I can get a quick overview with minimal clicking.

I'm sure some people love tabs, so if we could have the option of tab and non-tab view, that would be perfect. I think non-tabs might even work for the actual lists.

Since I have 35 tasks in those three categories, you can imagine I am not eager to have them all lumped together - the priority-based sorting can be make date analysis a little difficult.

What you might want to do is set up a msrtlist with all three as you desire, and then use that as your Overview.

This might be a start for you, for example:

(priority:1 OR dueWithin:"2 days of today" OR dueBefore:"today") AND status:incomplete

I didn't mean for all the tasks to be lumped together. I think they should be sectioned (or give us the option to make sections) based on the tab headings.

When I make a to-do list on paper I don't write the tasks on three different sheets of paper. I always write them on one sheet. I guess that's the effect I was going after.

Three columns would be very out of the box for RTM, but now that I see what you mean, I agree that it would be handy to cram more in at a glance.

It would be a nice printable view, too.

I'd similarly really like a tab-less version of the regular task list page. The tabs are nice and all, but I personally would rather have my tasks all listed on one page in different groups so I can quickly scan what needs to be done throughout various projects.

Maybe I should be using tags instead of tabs and using the overview page? I don't tend to put due dates on items so the overview doesn't seem useful to me.

I keep all of my tasks in one list, and then use SmartLists to chop it up as necessary (by date, priority, tag, etc.).

Of course, you could keep many lists, and then use a smart list to gather them up, too, but either way, you may find that SmartLists are your friend.

I tagged everything before Emily and Omar cooked up their 'Multiple' feature, so now it should be even easier to apply and sort by tag even if you are just starting to tag your items.

I took your advice and started playing around with SmartLists. They are pretty useful in gathering and grouping my tasks. Thanks!

I took your advice as well and tried out the smart lists. They're definitely preferable to manually using lists, but the problems I have are:

- The inbox gets really cluttered and there's no quick way to figure out what has and hasn't been tagged. I tried making a SmartList for untagged items but couldn't get it to work.

- Even though it's dynamic now, it's still tabbed and I think I'd like some kind of ordered list. Smart List Lists maybe?

frenetic, you should be able to search for untagged tasks with:

isTagged:false

Emily - you beat me to it with your rapid "isTagged:false" post.

Frenetic - I have two SmartLists which search for the absence of tags and the absence of time estimates, and I use them to ensure my items are properly tagged.

Once they drop to empty, I select all in inbox and move it to my holding tank en masse .

Thanks for the tips.

I started using smart lists but then became frustrated that I couldn't add to them while I was on their tab. So I'm back to trying to use regular lists.

Frenetic - that bugs me every day.

Emily, I know there are some UI issues about how to add tasks while in a smart list, I still think it would be great to be able to do so. Maybe if new tasks appeared in the inbox if you were in a smart list while you created it?

Lousise that's a fantastic idea!

Louise, thanks for this suggestion. We'll look into this possiblity -- perhaps tasks that are added whilst in a Smart List could be added to the default list (assuming you have one set, and it's not also a Smart List) or otherwise the Inbox.

It might be a bit confusing (as instead of being added to the end of the Smart List, the task would instantly disappear once you added it, because it probably wouldn't meet the Smart List criteria), so we'd need to look at the best way to do this interface-wise. We'd definitely like to make it as quick and easy to add tasks as possible, no matter which kind of list you're accessing.
