Percent Complete (new)

(closed account) says:
The old thread on this died, but I really think there should be a feature where you can log the percentage/parts/fraction of a task complete in the task information pane on the right. It would be cool to have little pie chart icons or progress bars next to tasks and a way to sort tasks by amount complete. I love RTM, but in my opinion it's a little how it assumes that a task is either complete or not started and nothing in between.

I just got another idea for this. Instead of this feature, how about a "time worked on" field? It could work just like the time estimate field, but would be used to track how long you've spent on completed or incomplete tasks. Also, it would be a little trickier to do this, but there could also be something where RTM could calculate how much percent of the time estimate is the time worked on, and then automatically fill in the percent complete field. This way both my ideas could work well along side each other.

I think this feature is very important and it's something that I've been looking for as I decide if RTM will continue to be my task planner.

Definitely need to incorporate a way to track percent completion on pending task.

Also would like to see a "start date" in addition to the "due date", since some tasks are related to future planning and you want to start being reminded about them well before the due date.

Yeah. :|

And that's a good idea.

Yeah I think the same.

It is very necessary to put a Percent Completed Field. There is a estimated time, I dont know why there's this field!

And I would add a new state of task: Working, started, or whatever you wanna call it.

Agreed I would love to see something like a progress bar (really nice to be able to drag in 10% increments or similar but that's mostly eye candy).

And if you could have hierarchical tasks then the parent would be the aggregate of the child tasks. Now that would be nice.

Oooo, a draggable progress bar is a pretty good idea. And there could be a percent thingy next to it in case you wanted to change it via the keyboard.

Hmm, that would be cool, too, but that's a totally different feature.

I think they are trying to keep the interface clean. If you've used a PM tool (like dotproject) then you know that features like this crowd the interface; and, in my experience, I don't, nor have I seen anyone, actually implement percent complete.

Break your tasks down into smaller tasks or turn your tasks that need percent complete into lists. Also, "remember the milk" is a phrase from the book Getting Things Done - which stresses that tasks should be small enough that you don't need percent complete bars (but projects/lists could have them).

But I'm a High School student, it would be useful to break down progress on assignments without having huge lists for every single assignment I ever get. (In other words, I see what you're saying, but if I got a 30-question worksheet, for example, having one task for every single question on the assignment would be far to tedious, but I might still want to be able to jott down how much I have left after taking a break from working or something.)

I'm in. This would be a huge improvement. I've tried to do it with tags, but it's real cumbersome. Top of the list.

I think that is a great idea.

This will be very useful. It will be easier to find tasks, which we should do first, because we have it almost finished.

Moreover this will be some kind of warning in case when we will have to many started task. It is very hard to manage tasks, when the amount of them is huge.

This idea is considered similar to "Add a 'percentage complete' field for tasks", and all votes have been transferred to that idea.
