i just want to second this idea. i've been doing this repeatedly myself.
the big thing here is consistency - i get in the habit of bouncing all over the tabs and task details without the need to "commit" anything. so it's easy to do it when i'm editing notes as well. a habit that is hard to break given the nice ajaxiness of everything else.

This being the only field that isn't autosaved it is easy to lose a note you just wrote due to the habit of using an otherwise smooth and wonderful RTM.
This only sticks out b/c of the rest of the site ease of flying through other fields.
