Daily Reminders should include tasks that are overdue

becky.schaffer says:

I think it would be great if the Daily Reminders included tasks that were overdue as well as the ones due today.

psweetma says:

I was also thinking this would be good - in some ways tasks that are overdue are more important than ones which are due today.

I think so too.

The fact I found this thread in an attempt to discern how to do exactly that might say something about the situation... An option would really be nice.

Not that I ever have overdue tasks...

:)

Okay. I'm wishing it were friday and I'm feeling a little punchy.

want really bad!

I set them up as recurreing tasks to get daily reminders but it is not the same and then i have to worry about deleting all of the tasks once they are completed...ugh!

mscholtz says:

+1 from me too! This would be a big big help.

Personally, I think your best feature (that no other pim I've looked at has) is the Postpone button. But if I forget to postpone on the day I get the reminder, it's really easy for the task to just slip off my radar completely.

Persistent reminders would encourage us to either complete or postpone.

Thanks!

nutrasweetness says:

Yes! I would love this. I agree these items are, in a way, often more important than the new items. Some days I get my reminder email, and I don't want to postpone it right away, but I don't want to forget it, it slips my mind, then I forget about it until days (or even weeks) later I log into RTM and realize it's still there.

+1/+0... The daily reminder should be controlled by a Smart List.

Posted at 7:15pm on September 7, 2008

rainerschnelle says:

You can creat a smart list (saved search) with all tasks due today and all tasks overdue. It's simple and I use it allt he time.

Posted at 10:53am on September 8, 2008

ogourment Pro says:

@rainerschnelle:
I also use a smart list for items to do, but it is not the same thing as having the list emailed to you every morning. Having this sent to you makes it hard to ignore! This said, sending an SMS for tasks that have a specific time in the day makes sense, but an SMS for a list does not. SMS messages are limited to 140 chars. There should really be a different reminder setting for:
1) tasks that are due today -or late (controlled by a smart list)
2) tasks that have a specific time set

davidbessler says:

Agree. Reminders need to include overdue tasks.

Perhaps an easier way would be to include a daily reminder for a list. This way I can have the contents of my "2day" list (which includes overdue tasks) emailed to me daily.

I am currently working on writing a small web app that uses the RTM API to do custom reports/notifications. It was inspired by wanting to receive the items in a smart list in my email in the morning...but with a little additional code it could do a lot more. Once I get it to a point where it is "working" I will throw it out for people to try. Understand it will be very "alpha" initially but it could grow legs :-)

jaap.kramer says:

+1 for this feature.

Including the tasks with no due date as a seperate section in the email would also be great. In this way you really have your complete list of todo items in your mail everyday.

@samycchn, those smartlist won't be send to your email. So they won't work.

This has been a pet peeve of mine with RtM for a long time. The notifications / reminders options are severely lacking. I like the fact that so many different options for HOW we are notified (i.e. email, SMS, IM, etc., and now iPhone), but as far as WHAT and WHEN, there is much more to be done.

Most importantly, it is very easy for us procrastinators to forget about overdue tasks with RtM, because the reminders disappear/stop after the due date/time. If I really need to "Remember The Milk", and if I forget to do it today (when it is due), then I *really* need a reminder/nag the next day so it gets done.

I need to nag myself about overdue tasks! Really! I am weak, help me!

Posted at 2:29pm on August 13, 2009

mehardin Pro says:

1 Create a list called "today" with the search parameter dueBefore:tomorrow

2. follow rtm on twitter.

3. create a template in your phone that says "d rtm !getlist:today"

4. Turn off the daily reminders.

5. Turn on timed reminders. Set a recurring daily task at say, 7am each day, that reminds you to get your today list, which now includes past due items.

Agreed, it would be easier if rtm just gave you the option to include them in your daily sms, but this workaround takes about 10 mins to set up.

I also would like to see the tasks that have no due date in my list every day.

cdhsman says:

I think that a better solution would be to make reminders a task level, rather than an application level, feature. Each task should have the option to set, or not set, a reminder. And you should be able to set what type of reminder and what time of day it should be sent. That would be nice!

+1 from me. I also thought it worth noting a few other threads asking for the same thing in an attempt to consolidate.

Especially since this would seem like a really easy fix / addition. Probably a small tweak to some SQL or possibly a template.
