"Single-edit mode" that automatically deselects tasks upon new task selection

I mentioned this in another post but thought it deserved it's own topic. Basically I would love it if we could have another "mode" - explicit single-edit mode. What I desire is that when I select a task all other tasks would be deselected. I'm not asking to replace our current non-multi-edit mode - that might make a lot of people unhappy. But, it's not very often that I want to select multiple tasks when I'm not in multi-edit mode.

Currently, the previous task remains tick-marked/selected, which is an overlap with the multi-edit mode.

The confusion between the single and multi actions is, in my opinion, the biggest issue facing the web site, as it leads people to delete or complete tasks by accident. Losing information is a horrible side effect of bad UI, and really needs to be addressed.
