display tags in list, like gmail, writely, etc

cchudyk says:
I find it extremely useful to be able to see which items are tagged as what without having to roll-over each item. Writely (now Google Docs) and Gmail do this... also gives you a quick shortcut to other items with that tag instead of searching the cloud.

great idea... I think that tags are one of the most powerful features in RTM and would love to see them used in lists like this.

Other tag ideas I have:
- How about allowing users to associate a color with each tag? This is a great way to visually process information. Especially if the tags will be displayed in the list! But even in the tag cloud, it would allow for another level of organization. I'm a bigtime user of google calendars and the coloring feature, while simple, is something that I can't live without now and I would love to be able to have similar colors in the two applications mean similar things.

- Associate specific tags with hotkeys would be cool too. Imagine hitting alt-1 for "work" and alt-2 for "home" in sort of the same way priorities are currently implemented

The appearance of tags in Gmail and Writely is very useful, and would be a valuable, optional addition to the RTM view.

I have some tags I use for odd purposes, so the ultimate in geeky tag suggestions might be to select which tags would appear in the list view.

Getting pretty arcane with the UI issues now, aren't we, Emily?

I second the tags in list view, very key feature

I think so too: To see at a glance what a task is about is key!

My current (not so satisfying) workaround for that issue is renaming taks by giving them the most apposite tag as a prefix.

e.g.

"call Maria clarify something"
"bug Interface broken somewhere"

I would love to see this "tasks tags in tasks row" issue getting implemented!

Excellent ideas, I must second the notion of displaying the tag(s) alongside the task name in the task list.

also...
Colors == Good
Keyboard shortcuts to apply your favorite/most-used tags == Good

I've been searching for an online to-do manager that I can try the GTD method with. First discovered Tracks and tracks.tra.in but the killer with it is a tasks list cannot be reordered in any practical way, and no time can be included in due dates, date only AFAIK. BUT Tracks does list the context of an action in small red text after it. In really all other areas though, RTM blows Tracks away. :) Its just further along and more powerful at this point.

Separate but related issue: I've just discovered RTM so I'm still new at it, but I have been having an issue with applying tags to multiple selected tasks at once...is this a bug just with me or are others seeing this? It tries to do it for a split second upon clicking the tag icon, then switches back to normal. (Firefox 1.5 mac)

to add...
Maybe it could be a preference, in your Settings, whether to show tag(s) directly in the task list or not. Also to be able to choose which tag(s) would display...so in the GTD method, you could choose only those with tags starting with the @ symbol (contexts)...or however you choose to use RTM. I do like the flexibility that tags give you.

More gmail, google docs like tag display would indeed be nice :), maybe even a tag overlay float like google reader has (gt shortcut). But then again, let's not get too demanding :)

Re: "applying tags to multiple..."

I have used the procedure as shown in the help without problem.

This idea is considered similar to "Show tags in task list", and all votes have been transferred to that idea.
