Special characters in tags -- what is allowed?

The reason I didn't find it is because forum search doesn't work the way I expect. If you search for "word1 word2" (without the quotes of course) it finds only those posts with the words exactly in that order. So if I search for "valid tag" and there is a post titled "what are the valid characters for tags?" it won't find it. I accidentally stumbled on the post above when I searched for "sort order" believe it or not.
