RTM never deletes your tasks. You can keep them in your lists and Smart Lists as long as you choose.
You could also archive them, but you'd want to move them all to a list first. (Maybe you'd want to search for completedBefore:"1/1/2009" and move all those to a list.)
Specifically on the BlackBerry, you'll want to be careful when deleting tasks, as they will be deleted in RTM too. Also, if you want to hide completed tasks (a frequent question), you can do so on Tasks' Menu.
